« on: October 05, 2007, 12:33:39 PM »
Well, another week another blessing...Isn't God awesome!?

It is first sunday and for many of us that means a busy sunday....I pray as always that each one of you shedding this weekend for Christ have joyous time and that through your playing someone may decide to give their live to Jesus.....Remeber..it is not about us or those around us, it is about being a part of helping to build the Kingdom through our music and witness for Christ. Be blessed and share any experiences from the weekend so that we can all learn and be blessed as well.

Floaded, I hear ya out there in the city baby...keep thumpin...

God's blessings to all my fellow bassists..

Peace...
May God's Grace & Mercy smile upon you!

I played my fretless 4 at church for the first time.  I liked the sound of it.

You played it on all the songs, or did a certain song call for that particular flavor?

None of the songs for Sunday required the low B string, and this is usually not the case.  We did "Glorious Is The Name of Jesus" in F, "Father I Stretch My Hand To Thee" in F, "I Really Love The Lord" in B-flat, and one other song I can't remember but it was in B-flat as well.  I love the fretless tone so I play it whenever I can.

That is something I haven't gotten into yet is the fretless. I have played around with one but never really gave it alot of attention. I do like the sound though. I guess that will be on my 2008 to do list if the Lord wills.

For me the challenge is being ON the fretlines as opposed to being a little ABOVE them.  If you're too far above you're flat.  Some players play fretless without lines--they use the dots on the neck as reference points.  I would be lost without the lines!

My next bass will be a fretless 5.

horrible. thats why i havent commented yet. i knew at some point you would be askin for me. (when you post too much, you cant hide)

nah. i didnt really play because i usher on 1st sunday. and P&W was struggling. like holdin on for dear life. it actually sounded like a funeral, even during the fast songs. and i was laughin when that thought came in my head because nobody plays fast songs at funerals, so how is that even possible?

at first i wasnt gonna play for the choir, but the director was signaling me to come on. so i went (really shouldnt have). the first song was a song we did for the choir anniversary which was (count) 2 sundays ago. so you would figure it would come out good. wrong. the organist just started playing while i was walking up to the front, and when the drummer wanted him to stop so he could count off and we all come in like we supposed to, he wouldnt stop because "he was already playing". IN THE WRONG KEY but i bet he didnt mention that. so i get on my bass and i start playing the song (right) and im just clashing. i couldnt be out of tune because i tune up my bass before service even when im not gonna play (just in case). so now i gotta find the key he's in, which is not what the choir is singing. The song supposed to start in G and modulate 3 times. He's in F. at no point the song goes to F so how did that happen? at the vamp of the song i got lost because the bass doesnt play root notes, so i know where to go if the song is played right (we would end up in Bb) but we only modulated twice an started in the wrong key so we in G now and im like this is annoying as heck. you could tell the frustration from the choir director and the president, because they both wanted to just shut it down and sit because it killed the spirit. so they sang another song which i didnt know and i tried but i didnt wanna be bothered after that disaster.
For my God... let "Golden Axe" prevail.

Man, definately wasn't trying to call you out LOL! You always bring something to the weekend shed. Wether it is a good or bad experience there are always lessons to be learned. We all go through situations and some are the same for each other. Man, I am sorry things did not work out sunday. I have had that happen before to myself though. No one was playing in the same key and the choir had the deer in the headlight look. What happend in my situation was that the director gave the cut signal to the band so there was no music and let the choir sing for a minute on the vamp, then he gave the signal to the drummer to come in, then the bass, keys, and finally the organist. By the time the organist came in myself and the keys were on the same page and key and then the organist fell back in line...God allows things to happen for a reason. you have to keep your spirits up because others are watching you to see how you respond to adversity as well as when things go right....the devil wants you to feel defeated and give up and not praise God with you talent and instrument..When things like that happen to me I can't wait to get to practice and debrief with everyone (in a christian way) and talk about what we as a group need to do to make sure we don't let that happen again...
