Question for today....Has this happend to you?
« on: October 04, 2007, 01:57:26 PM »
Ok, the question is "Have you started doing something within your playing that you really haven't practice much or was aware of what you were doing at the time? Here is what I mean...I am a decent pop/slap player....I do it sparingly when a song calls for it and if a song is designed that way..well, at choir practice last night keyboard player, drummer and myself were doing a little shedding before practice...for some reason I got this certain groove in my head and was just playing, the drummer fell in and then the keyboardist fell in too....I was doing several pop/slap riffs that I have never heard or practice before and did some chords as well. The big then about the pop/slap I was doing was that I was using 2 and sometimes 3 fingers on the pops...kind of like how Victor does...of coure no where close to his speed and agility..but I had never really focused on that...the MOM came in and was like "what song is that, we can do that for the offering or something" . We told him that we were just playing around and he didn't believe us....several of the musicians were asking me where did that come from?

I was just wondering if any of you have experienced that..I guess you can learn and grow sub-consciously....needless to say I was up practicing until about 2am this morning because I was so hyped!!

May God's Grace & Mercy smile upon you!

yeah that has happened. some riffs come out or a technique that i dont practice much. but sometimes i dont practice it because i dont know where or how it fits, but when that time comes and it just fits, sometimes i just go for it and dont even know i am until i do. sometimes when you feel it you shock even yourself.

Ok, so I am not crazy! I had practice again last night with one of the gospel groups I play for. I really like this group because 90% of all the material is written by the group leader and she gives me free rain to develop the bass lines as I hear them. On some songs she wants it a certain way but most of the time she will just play the chords. I really believe that this has allowed me to really grow and apply the theory that I have learned. I experiment with different lines and I know I have hit it when a big smile comes across her face! Last night we were doing a song she wrote and the spirit was moving in practice because everyone was feeling it....After going through the song twice I nailed the bassline and it has about 4 changes in it....We record our practices and also video tape them to put on our website and myspace which should be up and running by next week so you guys can check it out.....It was like I was in the zone and again I was doing some things technique wise that I have practice but not put alot of effort into...it seemed like I couldn't do them during practice or I got frustrated but again last night during practice it was like I had been doing it for a long time...I don't know where this plucking with 3 fingers came from all of a sudden.....

Did you  ever have a problem with a song? Couldn't figure out the progression or certain notes? Your driving down the street and you hear the song and all of a sudden you visualize the key patterns or progression? It is like you see exactly what the bassline is doing and you can't wait to get home to play it? This is an awesme feeling and I thanked God for this...I just pray this is the beginning of me going to the next level...It has made me want to practice even more....My wife already thinks I practice too much now but she understands because when I first had interest in the bass she gave me 3 months before it would be in the corner being used as an alternate clothes rack...well it is 7 years later, 3 church choirs and 2 gospel groups and God is still blessing.....

Thanks for sharing and allowing me to share.....

Yea. It happens to me too, and think of it the same way as ddwilkins. Sometimes, even in my practices, I'll just get an idea to do something. I call that my God lesson.

Yeah it happens to me all the time and when I go back to practice it I can't remember it

This is why I always record myself. Plus if I do something crazy, I'll deliberately analyze it and try to see how it fits in the progression. When I'm playing piano, I have a MIDI recorder setup...even in church.
