I am currently working on a "connect the dots" lesson, and hopefully a vid to go with it.

Give me a couple days, and I'll see what I can come up with.

Aside from that, I suggest learning little blips of licks--like three notes or so--that sound good, and start piecing those together like legos.

Eventually an array of patterns and relations will open up to your eyes, and things will become familiar. You'll start to hear it before you play it.

Aside from that, hammer on, pull off, bend, bend, beeeeeeennnndd, and trill, etc.

I'll try to get something up soon. I know the others wil fill the gaps for you whil I get that done.  :)

what he said.  also, singing along with what you're playing helps too, like good ol' george benson.  I don't think Prince sang with his guitar  :(

Also, when practicing scales, try to make it musical.  ie: break the scale up, slur some notes, use bends and pulloffs (phrasing), don't always start on the root (modes)....etc.

Whatever I'm practicing, I try to make it musical and it takes some of the struggle out of soloing.

go buy or download "breezin" by george benson...you'll be amazed how some of the solo's and licks are pretty easy..but then some are just crazy i just fast forward it and have to catch it on another day..lololol...but copy copy copy some of those licks from that song, and youll be able to play them in any key...i even think they have the tabs posted on ultimate guitar...but i read some where else someone said to copy copy copy so thats what ive been doing...my favorite lick now is that intro run from the o jay's "she used to be my girl" lololol i use it all the time...

soloing is all about tension and release. about coloring the chords you are playing over....either with chord tones or chromatic/outside embellishments where appropriate. it just takes work......... you don't develop an ear for it  overnight. record yourself playing a common chord progression then just experiment with the appropriate scales over it. learn how the chord ones in the scale sound against the chord, how the tension notes sound. PLay arpeggios over the chords and pay attention to how they sound. as you do this, you'll train your ear to expect certain sounds when you play the notes over the chords, that way when you want to express yourself, and you think in those terms in your head, you'll be able to translate then to the guitar.

Hey, J, what if we got all of us together and recorded ourselves over a backing track to see how we all approach stuff differently.

I don't know, maybe we could feed off of each other, share ideas, and possibly all improve as players...

Just a thought.  ;)  ;)  ;)

Alright everybody,Your good buddy needs help again.I've been trying to make sense out of scales and chord relations. But ' something just ain't clicking.Oh,bluesy type solos, contemporary, and jazzy solos.help if you can.

.......soloing is not rocket science!...soloing well is!...there is no exact answer for you...but there are a few rules that can help...

Firstly...whether you know the particular name of a scale or not....you are probably playing with in the the constraints of one scale or another.

I prefer the ideology of the late late great Joe Pass!
everything is MAJOR...MINOR...AND DOMINANT!

Keep it simple!

Learn the major scale...learn the minor scale (natural is fine) and learn and learn the pentatonic scales (major and minor)

Go get the scales from who ever!...No arguing and everyone is right!

now....just to get you going!...
Remember this!

watch your 3rds...and your 7ths....and your 6ths....everything else is game!
In minors, the 3rds are flat!.....In majors the 3rds and the 7ths are not flat...and in dominants the 7ths are flat!

If you want to solo really well and get your thought process going....Limit your solo to 4 notes!...this will force you to think and will also force you to stay away from just playing scales!

even though i am not really a guitar play (yet), i am probably give you some suggestions

Learning your scales is beneficial, because if a song is in a certain key, you don't want your soloing to sound off

For example, if you are playing in the key of F, it is best to know both major and minor scales of F. And you can solo by using all the keys of F (if the song is major, you can use major keys and if it is minor, you can use minor keys).

It is also beneficial to listen to a lot of Jazz upbeat music since they tend to have soloist guitars. You will notice that they play it in a different way and style.

Hope that information helps  :)
