A noob with questions about tom sizes

OK, my question is a tom question. What is the ideal Tom depth for each of the following sizes?
10" diameter x ??
12" diameter x ??
Floor Toms
14" diameter x??
16" diameter x??

Reason I am asking is because I am on the verge of ordering a custom kit but before I do, I need to know what how the depth will affect the sound of my toms. I want a 22" Kick, however, standard 10x8 and 12x9 toms are now higher than desired. So then I thought, what about Shallow toms? i.e. Brian Frasier Moore. 8x6, 10x6, 12x6. They allow him to have them at a nice height even above his 22" kick.
So what are your opinions? Will a 12x7 or 12x8 tom not be as full as a 12x9 or 12x10? What about a 14x14 floor? or will a 14x12 be more defined?

I understand these are personal preference questions and thats why I am asking. What is your personal preference.

Shallower toms will be easier to tune within the higher register without choking as easily.  Conversely, deeper toms will have a greater tuning range within the lower register without getting overly muddy.  Brian's usage for shallower toms are probably 2% aesthetic, and 98% functionality as it relates to the tone that he wants from each tom. 

The sound difference in the sizes that you've presented will be (somewhat) negligible - you will still be able to have a wide tuning range. 

By the way, I have a Pearl Masters MMX (#151 - Platinum Mist) - 10"x8", 12"x9" and 14"x11" with an 18"x22" bass drum.   To my ears, they work for me.  :)

OK I guess its time for me to be specific:
10x7 or 10x8 Birch
12x7 or 12x9 Birch
For the floors, I was going to go with Maple, but I figured Beech would have more presence.
14x12 or 14x14 Beech
16x14 or 16x16 Beech
Kick
20x18 Maple or 22x18 Maple

So from what j_kay is saying, if I understand correctly, there will not be much difference between a 12x9 or a 12x7 tom?

You know, everyone has a "problem" tom. One thats just a little harder to tune. I don't want to generate that issue from the get go with getting the an oddball hard to work with size.

OK, so besides j_kay, can I get some other thoughts on the sizes I am considering? Should I just stick with the standard sizes or should I 'think outside the box" and go completely custom?

...if you're going to have Birch toms, 8x10 and 8x12 or 9x12 will be great.  "I" wouldn't do a 7x10 with a birch shell. MHO.  You can't go wrong with the 12x14/14x14 or 14x16/16x16 beech floor toms.  Just make sure that if you go with 12x14 and 14x16 sizes, you get them on legs. (floor toms instead of suspended rack toms)  They'll be easier to position.

...as for the kick drum, I'm favoring the 18x20 Maple because I like the punch and the depth but if you're playing big rooms an 18x22 will be lovely.  I'm into the 20" kicks now. (20x20 preferably)

Thank you for your response. 20x20 kick, interesting. So the extra 2 inches of depth will give it a deeper tone right? I hadn't thought about that.
I think I will be going with 8x10 and 8x12 toms. Floor toms, 14x14 and 16x16.

No - the twenty inch depth will provide more punch, not necessarily creating a deeper tone.  What keeps this from reaching that caregory (read: a deeper tone) is because of the diameter of the shell. 

I would use this comparison to a 7"x13" snare drum, in terms of the concept behind this depth and diameter.
