We started ours two years ago, They play once a month during our youth service   and have traveled throughout NYC and LI playing for audiances as large as 2000. the band members range from age 7 to 60 and they dilligently practice more than 4 hrs a week.

It's a NY thang... y'all wouldn't know nuthin about that there... LOL  :D :D :D

Seriously though, steel drum bands much more common in NY (particularly in/around train and subway stations... lol) than in other states, but I've never seen one affiliated with a church.  Cool stuff, U13.

That sounds really good.  Very creative concept.

Just make sure that no one in the congregation brings out a cooler full of Coronas, then breaks out a blender and starts mixing up magaritas and mai-tais with little umbrellas in them out in the lobby.  Then you'll have "Deacon Jackson" walking around with his shirt off trying to dance, and "Mother Davis" sporting a one-piece with that little white hat on.
When you've done your very best, do even better.

I've only seen one other church have one. But Everyone loves them. The only bad thing is that we have no place to store them, and they are a pain to move

Being in NY, I get the pleasure of hearing a steel band every now and again and thoroughly enjoy the experience!  I, no longer go to the West Indian Day parades in Bklyn, so when I, get to hear one ''live'', it's a real treat!

Let me know when and where you're playing, hopefully i'll have the opportunity to come and listen.  ;D

My father directs a steel band called "Sounds of Steel".  They travel around the US and Canada concerts and play classical, spirituals, hymns and gospel music.

A few months ago I was at a large prayer breakfast and the guest musicians were the Victory Steel Orchestra out of N.Y.
They were awesome. I'd never heard anything like it.
