This is a indeed a much needed thread. And like Mysteryman has already stated, people don't want to learn the basics. They expect to instantly play fancy chords and runs, so to speak, but they're not willing to put in the time to learn the BASICS. You can learn all of the fancy stuff that you want but in the long run, its all going to come down to the basics. I've learned from more experienced musicians that you MUST learn THEORY. Now to be honest theory can sometimes be boring. It doesn't make you INSTANTLY sound like (Key-Wiz, trinatrine, soundofjoy, bishopcole, RayJ, mysteryman, ddw4e..etc) but if you learn the basics, eventually you will develop your OWN sound.

When I first came to LGM all I wanted to do was sound FANCY. But our choir started wanting to sing different songs and I couldn't keep up. I started asking for chords ALL of the time and then T-block let me know that if I ever wanted to be a REAL musician, I had to learn the BASICS first. Needless to say, I didn't want to hear this. As time went by, I started to understand that the only way that I could keep up was to learn theory. I admit that it was hard when I first started learning it, but now I can catch on to new songs better and I have become a better musician. So please listen when people try to teach you the basics. These guys have already been where we're trying to go. It may be hard to swallow sometimes but someday you'll understand that what they're saying is right.

God bless! ;)

Its sad because I've this... Musician learn a LIL theory and think think they have become Walking Standards... Fact of the matter is that we should look to seasoned musicians for guidance and some may not agree but we can learn what and what to do.. What to apply and what not to apply.. Always keep yourselfs humble not before man but before God... Younger musicians should all have a seasoned vet they they respect or admire... DO your time so when you get there you will be able to say I did my time and gain the respect of the one's coming behind you... You gonna want that same respect

AMEN!! I want people to realize that I didn't start out doing the fancy stuff.  I learned, watched, respected and listened and it eventually became my own sound!  I also wanted to add that respect IS the key to success in anything that you do!

Chevonee, you are so correct!! I stress this same philosophy to all of my students all the time... "LEARN THE BASICS FIRST" . I cannot stand to hear a person that can play all of the fancy chords but cannot play a simple hymn!!  I will continue to stress this to all that I meet as well as I know for a fact that myself and Key-Wiz, Trina-Trine, MM, H313, as well as many others that I have talked to, stress this same philosophy!!!  God bless you, AND THATS A REAL RAPP!!! ;)  Bishop Cole

Hey do you think the young folks have decorum ? Let's look around. There are a few that are ministers of music at their place, and if they were at a place where there is a BIG CHALLENGE in keeping choir members present, going on with THEIR program although pastor isn't fully supporting them, people boycotting rehearsals, etc. they prolly wouldn't last long. See I see them when the the chairman gives them a pink slip. So,  they will go back to just playing, which is easy. Extra Responsibility turns some of them away, so they don' really have.. see experience is the best teacher in this field, and until they can give what the church is asking for (type of music) I think they will humble themselves before speaking about they know more than you. They will stay within their lanes, cuz places like Episcopalian, Catholic ( not Roman ), presby, AME (Zion), primitive baptist, SDA, they want certain things. Might be a possibility that a seasoned person would be employed right ?

Whew, I'm not used to being called "Older Musician" yet ;D  I guess I have to go back into the gym and get those "Just for Men" products :)
Seriously though, I can see how today's young musician head can swell because theres no " seasoned " musician around to put them muscially in their place.  I look at all the youtube posts from the young musicians and there are some real talented guys and girls out there but, theres a few who need much prayer and practice. I offer this challenge, if you think you're all that and a bag a chips, lets see you post a video on youtube. Play a hymn, a spiritual, a contemporary gospel and traditional gospel selection and let us decide if you're the next big thing. No ringers allowed. What you think?
I love music, any kind of music.

I think you're right!  The hymn is the foundation of the church.  I love the new stuff out there but I'm a Mattie Moss Clark fanatic when it comes to music.  And most do not remember those anthems like "Genesis" or "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God" but I have a choir that does anthems, spiritual, hymns, etc. so that we can have a balance. My father (who's a musicians) always tells me to be unpredictable with your selection and it works!  Thanks for sharing.  And no, you're not old at all.  You're in the experienced category ;)

I remember a while back we had a guest evangelist preach on sunday morning, She brings a young guy to play for her, When she gets up to preach Young dude SLIDES the older musician off the organ, no handshake or nuthin. He plays some nice preacher chords, a hot shout, but when the bishop ends the shout and goes into a hymn, homeboy was LOST, you know what hapens next, The older musician then Slides the young guy off the organ and finishes the hymn perfectly.

Me personaly I respect all musicians no matter thier age, playing level or style, cuz i can learn something from them all. But its hard to respect other musicians when they dont respect you

I agree based on experience:

When going to different churches you have to learn and play different kinds of music that fit the churches profile.

Now the position that I am in is that I love traditional and comptempory and anything else I could get my hands on.

Now when an older musician comes along, plays the organ and traditional I have to respect him for what he does. When come to relief the musician I shake his or her hand becuase it's show that I am friendly and I am glad that I met him or her also it repersents musicianship.

But I can back up my claim when I say that when the preacher is done and hymn is being song I will back up that preacher. If I didn't know a hymn, then I will admit my mistakes and allow the musician that I relief so give me a hand.

That way I can learn how he played it and for me to practice until its engrain.

But as repect, I always give respect to young and to the wise.

And By the way: Your not old, your wise. :)

People have underestimated me when it comes to playing and try to play over me because I play pretty much basic. I have seen younger musicians try to play every trick they have just to show off. Most times I ignore it. If you are confident in your ability you really are not worried about showing off.

Preach the word bro... :)

Be Watchful of the musicians who
1. Are so quick to Boost themselvess
2.Play trick trick till u get dizzy (most time they dont have chords and placement)
3. Grade everybody else when they play

Know matter what age... I feel you should respect the next musician...

We were created by the same FATHER... SERVE THE SAME FATHER..gift given from the SAME FATHER...

So why is spiritual warfare going on among the Levites instead of unbelievers and believers...Jealousy should be a dead issue.. But because of jealousy, envy etc.

These issues will have you operating as a musician when you are suppose to be a minstrel...  But you cant play from the spirit draining you brain or playing by intellect to impress other...

End the end its just like candy... to much will give u a cavity...

So if you see a seasoned musician... ask question, listen to them and if they are now playin o ur level then take in that foundation because otherwise you will be playing a bunch of embellishment the you wont understand and you real really look and sound ummm well strange...
