Foundation and then build
« on: November 08, 2007, 12:13:21 PM »
This being my first thread. I'm here to cut down any advice.. Doesnt make make the king but I want to offer advice to musicians coming up. A lotta upcoming musicians kinda get things backwards and it can become very annoying to singers producers, and whoever you work with...

Foundation is everything...

If the director ask for a Bb chord.... give them a Bb chord.... Not a sus or a maj 7th... when you are assisting, it is not the time to be fancy and prove to them you know your stuff... This can show a lack of discipline as well... Its almost like they ask you for water and they are dehydrated and you bringing they best soda and all they ask was for a cup of clear basic without flavor water...lol

Ive seen so many people try and attempt to embellish a song they dont know and really its hard to do and singers to understand at times.. You can not add, color or embellish a song you dont know know.. This happens because musician lack discipline to sit and learn songs...
When you get a song... Learn the song first... You wanna impress somebody... Hear something and play it the exact way... That impresses more than any run you will think of... Because the song can carry itself...Nooooooow when you have learned the song... The sky is the limit.. Now you can make the foundation become nothing.. Now you can show what you can do or say this is here but, I can take it here.....

So my thing is all the theory is cool... But learn the basics....Being a great music also requires being a great servant...

Peace
Greg

I'm feeling you Greg.  Granted I think it's great to have chops and use them but sometimes it can take away from the music.  I try to play tastefully and appropriately at all times.

Absolutely!!!  Now when I play for myself, I know the chords and the style in which I'm about to play and sing.  It doesn't work with everyone else including ministers so I have to keep it simple.  I live by this...."less is more"
