I have started to look at the whole jazz things differently
first of all I studied jazz theory but never really liked playing jazz but lately i have been somehwat disatisfied with my organ playing
and seeing that dude from holland tear it up i began to make siome changes in how I practice and play
first thing I did is learn some songs from the fake book
the second thing I did was learn to play them with a variety of left hand voicings such as clusters standard a voiccings and B voicings
and chords on the third some quartal moves
then i learned to play with two hand chords
i
after working out these things I go to the organ and get my feet together when that is automatic and i can do it with my left hand then it is on
the most important thing in this process is playing with a drum machine or metronome
I cannot emphasize how important this step is
[/size]
during my practice I will take a bunch of chords through the cycle with left hand only
becaue true organ is all about that left hand supporting the foundation of the harmony
so I am looking for my left hand to become much more competent
yesterday in rehearsal i noticed some big gains and improvement in my ability to play effectively on new songs I am able to just hit those levt hand changes without thinking as much as
i used to
jazz songs are good because once you know the melody you are required to play a solo over all the changes
and this is with each song
with a lot of gospel songs we are really just required to play the melody and if we do solo it is over a small section of the song or a vamp
the discipline of soloing over all the changes opens you up and helps you to amp it
up
for a list of songs that lend themselves to gospel check out my thread in the keyoboard room
i list some of my favoirite songs that can be used over gospel songs
