This is a question that I have been pondering for a while.  I have my thoughts (which I will share), but I was wondering what you guys' thoughts were.

It takes extreme thirst and hunger for knowledge to excel in your instrument.  Essentially, it takes no compromise - no compromise when it comes to learning how to read, no compromise when it comes to cleaning those hands, no compromise when it comes to developing control with your pedal work, no compromise when it comes to...  You get the point, though.

To expand on the subject... One - a single unit or thing, not two or more [syn: I]

9 - Born- means to bring or come into existence- to bring into life; or to be complete.

The champion by nature is already born. To remain a champion is hard work, it's a responsibility- oh yes responsibility is heavy. False commitments will bring forth mayhem upon the champion inside. Excuses will not liberate the champion-it will only fabricate.  A champion's diet must consist of astute protein-a shrewd mentality will keep you living a champion's life.  The fruit of discipline is self-respect. Your Networth is important. But NOT economically cruical as yor SELF-WORTH. Don't cheat yourself!

What does it take to be number one?


Hmmm.  Well in terms of music, I think being number one is maximizing your individuality.  When your individuality is expressed through a musical instrument, it should produce a very distinctive sound.  So distinctive that when others hear you, you are placed in your own classification.  I think this can be obtained by spending a lot of personal time on your instrument.  Practice, practice practice.  Practice being you.  

When we listen to other musicians.  I think its important to draw inspiration instead of copying licks.  Like instead of learning a Dave Weckl lick, find out the source, so that you can interpret your own licks.  Then maximize you.  Develope your own signature touch.  No one can be you better than you.  This is what it takes to be number one in my opinion.

I believe that greatness is in all of us.  Some people tap into it and push themselves to the top, others don't (for whatever reason).  I believe that all of us have that voice inside of us that makes us seek more so-to-speak....  Often we spend time asking questions that we already know the answers to.  I believe that if we trusted the voice inside of us.... That basic instinct that says "I should do this...", cats would be a lot better off.
 
The answers are in front of all of us.  What are we willing to do to be the very best we possibly can?

Thats kinda my point.  There is often a lot of over-thinking when it comes to music.  Sometimes it feels like it gets "sportie" in the sense that one is trying to be "better" than someone else, instead of being the best possible player they can be.  Cats want to sound like 'x' player and 'y' player instead of developing their own sound. 

I guess the question now is..

Here is my take...

First and foremost Our bible says that we are born into sin and that we are fallen people. "Their our none righteous, not one." We need to realize that we are spiritually bankrupt without Jesus Christ.  The Bible says " it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me." It is Christ who is our Champion!! My Bible says " I am trasformed by the renewing of my mind"  how is this done?  reading God's word, praying, fellowship and being involved in the things of God.  This is what is takes to be a Champion. Believe on Jesus Christ!!

And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him:

I think the ease with which people speak of greatness/becoming great, is the measure of how difficult it is to actually become great. After one score and seven years of life, I've come to realize that it's apart of some people's psychological make-up to go beyond common effort. Some even go far, far beyond...

...for those who weren't blessed(Or cursed. I know many miserable perfectionists....) with this seemingly indomitable compeller, it takes takes the willingness to sharpen ones will, 'til their desires and their will becomes one(You may a desire to sit and read a 300 page book, but do you you have the will?). Their is nothing religious or spiritual about this; it's just the way the human mind works .... or won't work.

I think what makes me a champion is having the ability to beat Satan...and that ability has been given to me by Christ. When I am professional in my craft by being on time, not overcharging people for playing for them. When I try to encourage younger kids to play. Sometimes, I even allow them to come and do the sound checks for me. Christ gives me the want to be a champion. As I try to keep a positive attitude with people (and it aint always easy) and acknowledge him when people try to give me glory, I bounce that glory off me quickly, cause it's the real Champion that gives me the energy to do what I do.....and deserves ALL GLORY!!!

Have to ever came to church and you're physically tired. But when the music gets going and a burst of energy just comes from no where?...That's nothing but GOD...See Champions don't quit or give up. Since GOD NEVER gave up on me, why should I give up on the goal through worshiping him through music,that he has blessed me with?.....

This thread makes me think a while lot more of his goodness than I have in a while....

It's all in the mind. Proverbs 23:7 states "For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he". Many times we are defeated because of our way of thinking. We cheat ourselves out of opportunities for growth because of negative thinking. Most people don't even realize how powerful thoughts are. Your thought patterns often become your beliefs. Your beliefs at that point motivate your actions. Your actions afterwhile motivate and/or become your habits. Your habits make up your character. Your character defines WHO YOU ARE and points you to your destiny!
Do you think you are great? If you think greatness, you'll end up believing it, acting as such, and doing so on a consistent basis.

Israel said in a song on the Alive In Africa CD.... "Nothing can stop the favor of the Lord". I learned that statment to be conditional and is dependant on our thinking. Our way of thinking can often nullify where God is trying to take us and what He is trying to do in us, through us, and for us. We need to align our thinking with where we want to be and what we desire to acheive in all that we do. It's serious business. Great topic!
