At the Baptist church that I play at, I'm the only keyboardist/organist, and their is only an organ available there, so the organ is VERY important.  At the SDA church, the saints don't understand the importance of the organ yet, so I play on it more than the keyboard so that they'll get used to hearing it.  You all know that people get accustomed to what they see and hear, so (sad to say) right now I am brainwashing them, hoping that they'll get it one day.

Music isn't critical where you are at but you play 3 boards?/  Anyone find anything funny with that statement?

The organ isn't important at my church mainly because we don't have one, but I do think the organ is a very important part in achieve that traditional gospel sound.

Yeah, some contradiction there..( no oxymoron).

well, we don't have an organ @ church..the keys & sometimes a band..I have an organ@ home there.
Once I can play it, then I might consider asking the church to buy 1..

The organ itself isn't really meaningful, but that organ sound is very meaningful during those high praise times at my church.

The Organ was initially created to be a soloing instrument.

This is why there are Bass pedals to play the bass, and two manuals (The Lower for foundation, and the upper manual, which has percussion, for lead).

However in church this isn't the case.

The Organ is a secondary instrument DURING PRAISE & WORSHIP if there is a good keyboard player present.

BUT.....

When the Spirit is High, and there's a move of God in the House, EVERYBODY IS SUPPOSED TO ALLOW THE ORGANIST TO LEAD.

There is no other instrument that can set off a Church with one well timed chord!!!!!!

In Most COGIC churches I've been to The organist has almost as much control over the service as the pastor does.

A good organist can do 1 run and the whole atmosphere of the service changes. Thats why it takes so much annointing to be able to play in a service

Its true that the organ should lead a lot of the time but a good organist knows when to follow and when to lead. When to shout and when to just minister through a song. And which song to play at certain times , a musician shouldnt be playin "blessed Assurance" at alter call

I notice some organist wont even shout until the get a signal from the pastor (or unless somebody starts hopping down the aisle on one foot)

Or that single high Ab note (with a G grace note)

I think the only reason you say that is because people dont play the piano like they used to any more to get the church going. Many new players cant play on that level. Aint nothing like that octave style piano either. ;D

Not so fast there!  It ain't a rapp yet!!!!!!    :D

(I've always wanted to do that!!!!!!   :D :D :D )

It's generally common knowledge that if the Organist and Keys Player are around the same skill level:

The Organist leads on shouts and High Praise moments,
and the Keyboard player leads for the majority of the service.

It's not about "Which instrument is better", it's about what's the most appropriate sound for a particular scenario.

The Organ is Best for Shout Music.

The Keyboard should take the lead in 95% of the Praise & Worship songs/Special Selections.

(I play both, so I'm not prejudiced!)

That all depends on the church and the Location. The church I just started playing for Has not had an organist for a few years so they are used to the piano leading. Others on this board have said that piano players are more sought after in the south as opposed to organist.

But in NYC it seems almost impossible to have church without B3

Of course the rules I stated don't apply to EVERY church.
(Very few rules apply to EVERY church)

I agree about the scenario deal. Sometimes organ or piano is better. It doesnt matter for me whether its PnW or not. It depends on how I feel in the service. Some days Im prone to play the other instrument even though Im really a piano player. Keyboard players run things in the south although I see a shift.

Organ is good for shout but like I said many keyboard players cant get down like the old school piano players. They used to make both instruments talk. Very few musicians can walk the dog these days on either instrument. :D I need to find some clips of old school piano playing.
