If our B3 ever went down, service would be QUITE different.  I do a song on the piano maybe once a month if that.  If we had a bassist, I might do more piano but the organ can carry the whole spectrum.  Even if the drummer isn't there, the organ can keep things moving.

Actually, in today's society and in most churches, the organ has become the dominant instruments and those who plays it does so in a loud manner.  The organ is an acommpanying instruments which is best utilized for those fill-ins which makes the song richer.  The piano is the instrument that is used to provide sweet sound, flavor and poise.
When one thinks of a orchestra, think of the many different instruments within it, but at times, each one has its set sound in which it can be heard over the other instruments.  Organists, now-a-days, are too fancy, which is good at times, but learn to accompany the singer and not lead them into what you know and how you want them to sing it.
In other words, it is a meaningful instrument if played properly.

I agree, Real organist know how to lay behind the soloist and follow so that they arent a distraction to the singer or take peoples minds away from messege

Here in Birmingham, the organ is a main instrument in the churches that don't have full bands. Most of the larger churches use the organ for padding chords. Don't get me wrong, the organ is a vital part of any church. It just seems that where I am, the piano is king of the block as far as the main stream churches.
