Bass Only
« on: December 13, 2007, 01:14:38 PM »
I'm curious?  Is bass the only instrument that you play?  We were having service one day and the spirit of the lord grabbed a hold of our drummer.  We have three drummers but he was the only one there that day.  My MOM had seen me messing around on the drums in rehearsal one day and told me to jump on the drums and he would pick up my bass.  Has anyone ever had a situation like that?  I thought I get nervous when playing my bass but that was a whole new experience.

That's awesome. Yeah, I also double on electric or acoustic guitar when the situation calls for it. Believe it or not we're actually blessed to have two bass players so that gives us some flexibility. We have a couple of multi-instrumentalists in our group which definitely helps fill in some holes from time to time. Some of us even play our second instrument in a small group for the youth.

I think playing a second instrument is a great idea for anyone. It definitely helps you realize that there's a difference between playing BASS and playing MUSIC.

Yeah, my gospel kazoo hasn't made it's debut yet either.  Somehow, I doubt it ever will.  LOL!

Seriously tho, bass is my only instrument.  I've always wanted to learn the keys, though.

I started on keys.  Bass has become my latest interest.  When I do get a chance, I will get off the keys to play bass.

i can play a mean computer keyboard. look, no typos. LOL.
i played the recorder in 6th grade (like about 15 years ago) so that how i got familiar with reading music. but 3 years ago when i started playing bass i was taking keyboard lessons. i kinda stayed with the keyboard in the background, really relying on it with learning music theory. i started working with it more when i started hearin my own stuff in my head and wanted to put it all together. i started just dabbling with the drums a while back with the idea that it would help my percussive ideas on the bass (dont know if it has been or not) but every so often when im at the church by myself i'll get on the drums and start working it. I played them during a rehearsal once instead of my bass because the drummer didnt show and everybody timing was off with no drums and it was frustrating the heck out of me and 2 sundays back i played them on sunday morning for P&W because the drummer was late and the organist was out.

we've had a couple of jam sessions where someone just gets on something else, but since nobody really knows how to play anything else, it was more like a bunch of noise. but thats how people learn i guess

im workin on some stuff. i just recorded something last night. was up till like 4 in the mornin. its a crappy setup though. just a $150 yamaha keyboard going into the back of my computer using audacity to record. its really rough though (like recording a full length movie on a camera phone)

the tough thing is that  im not a vocalist, nor a songwriter, and just starting as a musician, so its hard to find a starting point or create ideas. but i take it as the Lord gives it, so i guess i dont have to be none of that (or at least not now). i guess if im sitting there starting to cry because what im playin is touchin (no lyrics or nothin else) then i guess i got somethin workin.

im at the bare minimum with the drums (probably more lacking than that)  but im just basic with the keyboard, but i can find my way around on it some because i used that for my theory and musical foundation. the thing with many instruments is u dont have the time to dedicate to all of them to become truly skillful. I put most of my time on the bass, and some on the keyboard, either studying or trying to play stuff, and fiddle on the drums once in a blue moon.
For my God... let "Golden Axe" prevail.

bass - advanced
keys - intermediate
drums - intermediate
sax - intermediate
acoustic/lead guitar - beginner.

I always felt that if you play bass, you'll be a better player by learning to play drums and same with the drummer as well.
