Question please for T-Block and other music teachers
« on: December 26, 2007, 09:03:33 AM »
I am making remarkable progress learning to play by sheet music.  Thank the Lord!

I am currently learning 7th intervals and octave my knowledge of music theory is growing alone with the strength of my fingers and will power to play longer.  I am also learning to play hymns alone with Christmas songs.  I will be finished with the Christmas song book 01/09/08.  I am trying very hard to only practice the songs that my teacher is assigning me, but it is hard.  Most of the songs……….well I don’t like the songs.  I am not complaining, I love music but these songs are like……. I will be glad when I finish this song (type-songs to me).

My questions is do anyone know of black gospel music books for a Level 2 beginner that I can present to my teacher?  :)

Waht kind of music books did you use when you first started your piano lessons?  Is it hard to change from classical music to gospel.  A couple of the songs that I am practicing now is Lone Star Waltz (6th intervals), Cafe' Vienna (7th intervals), ever heard these songs?  Is there gospel songs that can teach the same theory and technics?

I didn't use any gospel music teaching books.  I reached back for the theory that I learned playing the classical style and applied it to gospel music.  I did purchase a few music books (WOW 1999, John P. Kee, Smokie Norful, etc.), but after I got good at playing using progressions and my ear, I stopped buying them.

The theory is the same for all instruments, it's just applied differently.  I haven't heard of those 2 songs you mentioned above.  I'm sure there is a gospel song that uses those chords, I would have to hear it to be sure.

I can E-mial you the sheet music, tomorrow, if you would like to play them.

SisterCM,

I have looked for books that teach Black Gospel for beginners and I have yet to find one. My grandson and I are both taking lessons from a professional classical muscian who I love. My grandson started out with an Alfred book, but we have recently abandoned it. We are not using a book.  I brought the piano teacher, examples of music that I want to play. The teacher played it. And then I said how do I get there?  And that's what we're working on. And much to my impatience we did not immediately start playing a song.  Yes, he can teach me to play one song at a time but he chosed to teach me the theory behind it and very importantly  the techniques so I can play many songs. (the old fishing lesson parable)

Some of us can learn on our own, others require a teacher. I learned some things on my own but I am learning more with a teacher. Find a teacher that knows how to get you to your goal.

Sorry to tell you the truth, but if you REALLY wanna learn gospel music, books arent gonna help you.
You Have to work on your EAR. and theory would probaly help a lot. Gospel music is all about FEEL and if you rely on sheet music to play contemporary gospel   you will not sound very good. This is because The artist dont write out sheet music for thier musicians. People transcribe the songs onto sheet music after the recording, and they cant Transcribe it note for note because it would be too hard for the average musician to read. What they do is make it as easy as possible therefore making it sound wack (for lack of a better word)

Dont give up on learning how to read (like I did) Reading is a valuble tool. But If you wanna play stuff like tye tribbet hezakia walker Or play for a soloist you need to spend a long time workin on playing by ear. When you rely on sheet music and theory based chord charts you are limiting your creativity

You might also wanna read a topic from a while ago that in which we argued discussed which is more important:Theory , Reading or playing by Ear:

:) SisterCM, I am a beginner too and it sounds as if you need to talk to my teacher. He teaches gospel music to beginners and takes the time to rewrite all the music for his students based on their level. He introduces new chords, new baselines and etc as you progress and he uses up-to-date gospel songs to make you feel like you have really accomplished something. I am very pleased with what I am accomplishing, because he gives you what you want mixed in with what you need.

To the original poster
Here is a book on gospel songs.
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Hal-Leonard-Gospel-Songs?sku=900619&src=3WFRWXX&CAWELAID=26050785

Me Personally I would never take Lessons from a teacher that would  not let me choose some of my own material. Most good teachers know what songs will help you learn what  you want to play, but I dont understand why she would make you learn ALL Christmas songs without teaching some of the stuff you wanna learn

I think we are talking about 2 different kinds of books. I was refering to sheet music not Theory books, (I've opted to buy DVDs to learn theory as opposed to books) But they teach the same thing so I'm not knocking books when learning, I Just dont think people should rely on Chorded out songs  forever. Instead they should apply the theory to thier ear

I'm sure Theory and Sheet music books  help some people to LEARN but I dont think I've ever seen a GOOD gospel musician use  books while performing. But that all depends on who you play for and what your playing.

The guys who i see using sheet music during Gospel music  peformances never sound as eloquent as the guys on the recording. It often sounds basic and Many of the important aspects of the song are missing

The guys who use Chord charts Usually sound good but they dont flow as well as an ear player because when the singer or praise leader changes keys or gets inspired to sing another  song , they simply cant follow

I am sorry if I led you to believe that my teacher is making me learn all Christmas songs, that is not true, doing the Christmas season I have a beginners Christmas songbook, along with a beginners hymn book, I have no problem with these books.  The Christmas songbook I will finish 01/09/08.  Mrs. Coleman will allow me to bring the songs that I wish to learn but the songs must be at the level that I am currently at and be at the level of theory that I am learning.

Thank you for the website, I will check it out.

I have found that the theory that you post here is the same information that I am learning in my lesson book, it is just my practice songs are not gospel songs.  I am learning the scales, forming chords, learning bass notes, playing chords with my left and right hand.  I have been comparing the beginner’s info here with my lesson book and it is basically the same. No problem there.  So the lesson book that I have is good, again I just do no like the classical songs.

T-Block after you finish all of your education are you going to teach music and write your own songbooks, if yes, please do not forget about the students like me out there.  I am a 49-year-old student that love music and want to learn how to play by sheet music (need a gospel music book-not many on the market), ear and progressions and want to learn to play in all keys.   :)

Aiight, I agree wit u here.  I found that out the hard way.  I spent all that money purchasing song books when my ear helped me learn it faster and better than the sheet music.  Still, there are times when you trying to learn a specific chord or run, but can't quite get it by ear.  So, you opt to get the sheet music for help, nothing wrong wit that as well.

I don't know about writing my own songbooks, but I'm definitely gonna teach.  Hopefully, I can make some DVDs and give online lessons in the future as well.  I got so many ideas of what I wanna do, but don't have the time for it right now.

Training my ear is one of the goals that I have set for myself, after I reach a certain level reading sheet music.  I just don’t know when is a good time right now (any suggestions?).  I want to do my very best at what I do for the Lord!  I also want to be able to help others as everyone here has helped me.
