After several weeks of researching and playing different instructions at guitar center, i finally narrowed it down to the bass i want for my 2nd 5 string.  Right now i have the Fender jazz V (passive) i love the tone but the feel of the neck and radius of the neck feels to slow.

So i was thinking if i should by a bass and replace this pickups and preamp with some big singles (nordstrand) but i didn't feel like spending the time and money for it.

My first choice was the Schecter Stilleto Custom 5 string, (which i was going to replace the pu's and preamp) but didn't have the money or the patience to do so..

So the next bass that came in line for the deep tone and growl that i was looking for is the Ibanez SR505...

the neck is awesome and fast... and it sounds good too.  It's a different tone then the fender sound that i'm looking for, but yet i like it.   I was thinking of buying then changing the pu's and preamp, but this might be a keeper just the way it is for a while.

I just wanted to share my experience with my LGM family.  Thanks! :)

I've been looking at the Ibanez 5 strings also. I live over one hundred miles from the Guitar Center though, so I have to go audition the bass and buy the same day. I was looking at the SR405. Did you play that one in the store? If so what was your rhoughts?

Is it the SR405QM(Quilted MAple) or the earlier model SR405? Because I have the SR405QM, It's a very good bass and I don't regret getting it. http://www.learngospelmusic.com/forums/index.php/topic,46929.0.html

Yeah that's the one. That bass looks sweet! What do like best about it? And what do you least like about it? How is the string spacing for slap compared to Fender. What sold you on it?

Dfwkeys,

Are you still shopping or have you already found the Ibanez?  The reason I ask is because if you are looking for a great neck profile and excellent tone, you might want to consider looking at used Roscoe basses.  You can get a used LG-3005 or SKB-3005 for $1,500 - 1,900.  I have never played a bass with better neck feel than my Roscoe fretless.  Lord knows I don't need another bass, but if I were to buy another bass anytime soon, it would be a fretted Roscoe to go with my fretless.

Peace,

James

I can definitely second that... but I didn't suggest it because based on what he was looking at, I figured it wasn't in his budget.  But now that you mention it... what exactly is your budget, DFW?

Also, even if your budget is around $500-600, I'd kick any Ibanez to the curb in favor of a used Lakland 55-01.  No doubt about it.  It would be worth the extra saving to get one new if you can't find a used one.

Yes, the 4 string version, is nice and sweet... it has narrow string spacing, and a flat radius neck... i had bought a schecter stilleto custom, but regretted it when i played the 4 string ibanez... it sounds better, feels, better, and you cannot go wrong with the barts... also a note, the neck is so fast, it actually makes you a better player.

You definately cannot go wrong with this bass the 4 string and the 5

well my budget is around $500-600, i could go for the $1500, but i promised my fiancee that i was going to save for our wedding which is in september... so far, i've been spending all my money at guitar center... :(

i told her that this is the last thing i will buy... but i might have to go to the alter to repent if i break a promise and spend more then i should, since i've already been doing that anyways...Are there any roscoes or lakland at guitar center and where can i put my hands on a Lakland?  Thanks!

Nope, you won't see them at GC, unless someone lost their mind and traded one in there (not likely).  I'm sure there are some shops in the DFW area that have them.  I'll have to check and let you know if I find any.

Shoot man, you're just in DFW... if you were up for a road trip, I'd say come on down to Austin and we can arrange a hook up with you, Torch7 and myself, and we can head over to Bass Emporium.  You could check out some fine instruments there, including Roscoe and Lakland.

If not, I'll be in Waco on the 26th for our state young people's conference.  If you could make it, I'll have my gear with me, so I could let you check out my Roscoe then.

Until you can get to Austin to try the Laklands and Roscoes, GC usually has the BTB series there... next time, check to see if they do.  I didn't like the SR505 when I tired one, but then I tried one of the BTB 5'ers and really liked it.

LOL I'll never forget that day i went to same ash in long island as I stepped in it was the first thing that caught my eye, I had to try it, it felt great and the sounds WOW!! and it cost so little  ;D I had to buy.I love the weight it's not as heavy as some other basses, the pick ups are GREAT u can get most of the sounds u desire, what i hate is the chrome seems to be corroding, i don't why  >:( especially the bridge. It's quite easy to slap i doubt u can get that single coil sound that a Fender might have. I have no regrets
