Formation of New Choirs

I have a question: When the Pastor decides that a new choir needs to be formed in the church is that an issue, in your opinion, that needs to be voted on?

I'm asking this because there is beginning to be a lot of fuss in our church about our pastor starting a young adult choir (ages 19-35) without going through a church vote. I can understand both sides of the argument but at the same time the church currently has a youth choir (5-approximately 18), a gospel chorus (with people between 35 and 65), a senior choir with members between 50 and 85 and a male chorus for all ages.

What do you think?

The Pastor is the shepherd, right¿  I don't see a need to vote on it if it's coming from the Man of the house.

You must have a pretty big church to have that many choirs...lol. We have a youth choir ( any youth from 6 to like 25), the sanctuary choir ( adults and youth combined ) and the men's chorus. But honestly, I agree with VT! Just some things the pastor can do if he sees it fit for the church.

It all depends: if your pastor is a "strong pastor", then what he/she says goes regardless.
If your pastor is not a "strong pastor" (e.g. if they were voted "in" by a board of officials) then he/she may need to go through the board for approval.

Sounds like you go to my church. ;D
I think you need to ask what is the reason for a new choir. If there is a division based on age groups fine.
At my church we have youth, gospel (ages 18+), adult (ages 18+) and now we have a young adult choir which is supposed to be 18-35. I personally didn't see a need for another choir. Especially when the other choirs that fall into the same age range each have like 4-6 members at any given time. Why wouldn't you join one of the existing choirs? It had nothing to do with young adults having a different style or traditional vs. contemporary. Unfortunately alot of the choirs at my church are from original members of the adult choir not being able to 'get along' with the directors. So they asked the pastor if they can start a new choir and my pastor always says yes. My church is one that needs board approval otherwise groups will be popping up everywhere for everything.
To top it off one of the members of the young adult choir just joined and she's in her 50's. Not to say they are not a blessing, but if you're going to set an age restriction, you need to stick to it.
Personally I think the 3 choirs can each take their 6 people and have one large choir.

That's what I was thinking.  What kind of church is this where the pastor can just start a choir.  Starting choirs isn't in the pastor's job description.  Now if it's the kind of church where the pastor "owns" the church...then I can see the fuss.  If it's the kind of church where the pastor got hired (and can get fired)...or the denomination's higher conference/committee appointed him to that church (and he can be removed)....then put him in his place in the most Christ-like manner possible  ;D

Where my father plays the organ, the only thing the pastor would ever say to my father about music would be a compliment.  If he ever has any recommendations, he would never go directly to my father, he'd talk to the minister of music who ultimately makes the decision.  But then again, when my father had his interview before being hired, the pastor (who was one of many on the committee) didn't say a word...because the same committee that hired the pastor hired my father...LOL

but different churches have different hierarchal structures and ways of doing things...

It does seem like there was a gap.  Sadly, in the church at which I play doesn't even have that age group.  It would be nice to have a 18-35...

Speaking as a minister with a pastoral heart and mind if the pastor desires to add a choir thats between the pastor and the minister of music. The problem in so many churches is there are too many pastors in the pews. As minister of music I just recently dissolved the youth and young adult choir and organized a completely new group geared towards teens but inclusive of the young adult age group. This got rid of a TON of confusion and removed old foundations and gave a fresh start. I support starting a new choir there should always be room for growth in the church stagnant christians aren't getting us anywhere.

Sounds like a great choir.
