The bass he's playing is actually a Fender Jazz copy made by a company called Brooklyn Gear ( the makers of the KSD Basses ) but I feel the same way as DW........ I'll take a good Jazz bass anytime

And he had an actual KSD sitting on a stand next to him. This is a must have DVD. Anthony Jackson is on the first half. I love the sound of a vintage Jazz bass. Just something about that growl. Those basses can do modern as well.

I think thats is a Fender, well at least thats whats written on the Headstock. He Probably has a Ksd sitting next to him on stage, but he definetly is not playing on this song.

I played my friends KSD this past weekend, nice bass, I couldn't fully get to enjoy it...b/c he was putting a whoopin' on his Ken Smith custom, right there in front of me....  Anyhow... I wont to get a jazz bass, as my next bass purchase.

Man, that thing sounded huge! I just can't get past their chunky necks and the weight. Melvin's a big guy and has huge hands so no problem for him. I'd still go for the Fender if I had a choice.

Not only is Melvin Davis a Bass Monster but he is a cool, down to earth person too. When he is in Orange County, Ca. he plays a 2nd Baptist Church in Santa Ana Ca. I met him at an evening programs a few years ago. WOW! I was blown away by his skill and also to watch him in a worship situation.

Don't mean to beat a dead horse, but thats not a KSD, that he's playing, thats a Fender. He's playing that same bass in the other video, & that was a concert back in 1995. So it is impossible for that to be a KSD, since they came out around 2003 or 04. If you look real hard at both videos, that is definetly a Fender headstock, not a KSD. The KSD headstock is a little different & the logo is at the top of the headstock, not under the G string.  He endorses KSD  now, but it's not the same bass.

Now they are playing real music. That's what I call playing with the band.
Vision without action is just day dreaming. I miss practicing.

I finally checked out the Melvin Davis sight. One thing that really caught my attention, is the article by bass player mag, in 1996, thats he has posted. It stated that Melvin is an Ken Smith enthusiest, he has a closet full of basses. He has a custom 5, eight custom 6's, & a custom 7, but he favors his 1970 Jazz Fender, when on the road.  He may have retired his 70's Jazz, in the past 3 to 4 yrs, but that really says alot about Fender.

I remember him playing a 70's Sunburst  or Black ( I had a different life style back so it could've been black but I'm sure it was Sunburst...anyway)  Jazz way back n the day ( mid to late 80's ) when he was with O'Bryan.

Melvion is a beast in the industry. I hope nobody takes that comment as bad... He is a true talent from reading to mere improv. And he does a have a slew of Ken Smith basses in his collection.

Can I get just one 5 string Ken Smith, lol...

I agree man!!! I have a 5 string Fender Jazz (her name is Justine) and just started the DR Fat Beams. She is awesome!!!
Forget them "boutique basses" (smile). I did purchase the Schecter Studio6 and she's sweet. But Justine is MY GIRL!!!

I love the way they sound but something about them just doesn't feel comfortable to me.  I'll eventually get a Jazz 5 and spend some time with it to expand my versatility but for now I'll have to remain an odd ball.

Btw, check out Melvin on Larry Carlton's "Room 335".  He gets a pretty nice bass solo at the end of the song...Funky!!!

Be Blessed,
J
