bass cabinets

hey i know alot about tone wattage ohms and all that other stuff but one thing i never learned is what is the point of these for lack of a better word... scoops on bass cabinets pictured below are are two the first with the scoops the second without does anybody know wat they do. is it for xtra resonance

Scoops?  Are you referring to the ports on the top and bottom of the Eden cab?  If so, most bass cabs have ports, sometimes they're front ported, sometimes the ports are facing the rear.  In a nutshell, they are there so that air can move when the speakers are in use.  If you've ever put your hand in front of the air ports while a cab is in use, you'll notice that a lot of air is being pushed out.  The harder the cab is pumpin', the more air gets moved.  Just a quick-n-dirty explaination, someone else will probably chime in with more detail.

If you look closely at the picture of the Epifani cabinet, notice the space under the bottom speakers. That cab is also ported.

I'll add that there are some cabinets that are sealed (i.e. no porting).
