cosign.

I think in the gospel world,   it still pays to have good looks,  but singing ability will trump  looks EVERY time in the gospel arena.

This is definitely not true in the  secular arena.

also fred hammond, sorry his is over weight... so i would agree with larue in gospel they want to know if you can blow...

Look at Luther VAndross, Kelly Price, Biggie smalls, Fat Pun, Fat joe, Sean kingston, Heavy D, Aretha Franklin all them was FAT,

I think that Heavy people are accepted more by the black music world as oposed to mainstream pop,

That's true. Note-- Aretha was small when she got started & Kelly Price didn't really make the money in the secular world. She had to come back to the gospel.

There are some execptions, but look at the overall population of secular artist, it's about the look. That's why we had Milli Vinilli (sp)--- they had the look, but not the voice. Martha from Weather Girls didn't have the look, but they used her voiv in C&C Music Factory.

Most of the artist you named came out before the 90's. This thing about the look became more popular in recent years. That's why cute girls are having their voices done over in the studio. They look good, but can't sing.

In the gospel world, you got to be able to sing or like Kirk Franklin, write, do music and teach your group how to sing.

Wow.  Interesting stuff.

I'm kinda caught between a rock and a hard place, here... LOL.

I'm trying to stay out of the fray on this one, but I really hate passive-aggression, and being that I've said so countless times, I don't want to be a hypocrite.  So, I'm just going to share my thoughts and take whatever fire comes with it.

I'm really disappointed at the direction this thread took after our fruitful discussion in VT's "Opinionated" thread yesterday.  We all have opinions (and Lord knows mine come a dime a dozen), but as Christians, we DO need to be more tactful in sharing them.  And as VT (I think?) said in that other thread, we don't want to say anything that might be offensive to a person if they were standing right here among us.  And like Sister T (I think?) said in that thread, we don't want to make excuses for saying things tactlessly.

I respect everyone's right to their opinion.  But, I really don't think we should be calling names in this thread under any circumstances at all, unless what we're saying is edifying or positive.  Shun the very appearance.  Even if we don't mean to be offensive, sometimes, we can.  And what's worse is that online, you may not ever even know how far your words can reach.  The devil is a master manipulator.  He can turn your not-so-bad intentions into a hot mess just to tear up the body.

That's my two cents.  If y'all don't hear from me anymore, I ran off to Costa Rica.  LOL

That's why i dont listen to secular (with a few exceptions,LOL) i dont miss it either. It's sooo easy not to listen to them. I know of non christians who listen to a lot of Gospel music, just because the music is good. I tell you the best music is still in church

I agree, even though I guess I'm too young to know the artist you mentioned,
anyway, we still got Jill Scott, and sadly thats all that I can think of. Almost all the music that is being put out now is pure crap, these little people simply dont know how to sing :D
So I think I will stick with music from the 70s, 80s and 90s

and I agree with LaRue, If these gospel artist were sitting among us we would not be naming names Unless maybe yall liked getting your *** whooped by a big girl :D

Kim and Twinkie are not ugly, however, because of weight issues they do not have "the look " by the secular standards.

I gave my sincere opinion, regardless if they are here on LGM or not. I think the stars all know what they look like. The topic is about having "a look".

Another is Fred Hammond. The brother is anointed. The brother don't have the look.

The gospel industry is much different than secular. "The look" in the secular is all about the physical. "The look" for gospel artist is all about the anointing. In the gospel arena, the fans aren't looking to see if you can dance good or if you are a certain size. Gospel arena focuses on your ministry and anointing.

Fred, Twinkie, Tye, & Kim most likely wouldn't make it in the secular world. But in the gospel world they are awesome.

Case and point---Rueben Studdard. He didn't do well in the secular world, but his gospel album did very well.

OK!!!  I now have to go outside and catch my breath.  THE SISTERT OF LGM MINISTRIES JUST PUBLICLY SAID THAT FRED HAMMOND DOES NOT HAVE "THE LOOK"!!!!

This calls for a Dr. Pepper for sho'!

LOL!! -- I was speaking of the world's standards. I'm his number one fan. He's my man on the side---I love all of him! I don't look at people based on size---Shucks when I dated Big Daddy he had a gut and I was small. Big Daddy was and still is gorgeous to me! Fred Hammond is beautiful to me!

As far as the being opinionated----Can we not speak of things honestly without it being called opinionated? I believe the comments here giving examples, only spoke the truth. If those artist would be offended because they are called obese, then, demial they are in. We gave examples, staying within the context of the topic.

I mean really, if this thread is too opinionated, let's stop posting news stories and then talking about those folks---they may be on this board too. Let's not talk about anyone or anything---that'll keep posting down in the lounge.

The opinionated thing is when we go too far. No one is being ridiculed. Statement of facts have been made.

Dr. Thunder is the devil!  Tastes like cough syrup.

Does anyone other than me remember when MamaT met Fred Hammond and almost hit the pavement head first!?

So for her to say that her "boy" really doesn't have the "look" means she is being completely honest in her perception, not "messy".  You can appreciate that from her.

If I were in the same room, I WOULD ask Kim Burrell how because I've met her before and knows that she keeps it real (and "snotty" only when it needs to be).

I actually admire the "snotty" side of her.  It's like she says "you call what I do JAZZ, and you say it's not of God...but regardless of how you feel I'm an artist and won't be treated like anything less".  That helped me!!!
