MarkBass discovery
« on: July 21, 2007, 02:20:54 PM »
My godson's father is doing djing on the side. He is in the market for a new set of speakers.

We were in Guitar Center, we were on our way out. I heard some bass playing, I looked to see where it was coming from (you know your a bass player when you'll break your neck to see where the bass was coming from) saw a guy sitting on a combo with a bunch of Markbass stuff behind him. The cable disappeared behind him. He stopped playing and looked at me with a smile on his face (must have saw the confusion)

I asked him what are you pluged into he stood up and pointed to the combo he was sitting on. Keep in mind I had no idea he was sitting on a combo I though it was a drum chair. Never thought all of that sound was coming out of a 12inch combo. While he was playing I was being attacked by sound waves as I was standing about 30 feet in front of him. I thought he was playing through at least 4 10 inch speakers. I was completely amazed. Has anyone else experienced this.

Oh Yes Sir!!!!!

I ran into this at Musician's Friend here in Kansas City. I was playing though a Kustom 310C which I now own. I was looking for a second 5 string bass I walked out with the combo. I didn't think that the combo would push but oh boy was I wrong. And I got it for a steal $236. (It retails for $999) It just had a few scratches on the side and the back. Don't rule out combos cause they are a lot more portablr than separates (Sometimes. My combo would be an excception cause it weighs almost 150 lbs!) This may sound funny but I probably one of the few bass players that is not an Ampeg fan. Cabs or combos. The sound great but there are ways to get the same sound it you know how to set an EQ and you don't have to break the bank.

So with all of that being said......
Combos are worth checking out

Just played on the mark bass 2x10 cab... 500watts, and wow, i love this thing..

Powerful, lightweight, and true tone, but pricey... has strong powerful lowend 40hz...

what you hear out of this the the sound of the bass guitar and nothing else. it has a enough power to shake the entire house down.

for the price it's $999,

I dunno, I tried one and absolutely hated the tone I was getting, and my attempts to make adjustments didn't seem to help.  I didn't have a lit of time to sit down with it though.  Maybe I'll give it another look in the near future.

Now the cab that I did have that experience with was the Bergantino IP series 1x12.  OMG... that little box not only rocked the building, but sounded soooooo smooth going through just a line-in type box right to the cab!  I dared not plug into the 3x10, I would have been floored for sure.

MarkBass makes good loud amps and cabs. The LMII gives good bang for the buck. The heads are very light and offer great portability. But, I'm sticking with my Ampeg SVT-IV Pro for now.

i noticed that only certain type of basses sound good on it... anything with thin pickups won't sound that great, and i also noticed that it sound best through the 8x10 rather then the smaller cabs, unless it's cranked up really high... the best sound came from the modulus & fender jazz bass.

I recently switched to Markbass from Eden.  I play a custom J 5 string and a Lakland 55-02 and they both sound incredible through it.  I play it with Epifani, Schroeder, Avatar, and Aguilar cabs and it edged out my 550 on all of them.  It's kind of hard to explain, but it has all the richness and fullness of the Eden without the grit.  I like a clear burpy tone with lots of tight bottom and musical highs and the LMII delivers that and then some.

i know exactly what you mean... the sound is really defined and clear... It's kind of like the warwick basses... you either love em' or hate em'  the 8x10 marbass cabs was out of this world... i heard someone playing it at guitar center from outside the building and at first i thought that it was coming from the satellite radio speakers that was cranked up really loud until i went in the store...

I was at GC yesterday and briefly tried the LMII again through one of the Markbass 2x10 cabs.  I absolutely hated the sound... but I know that head can put out better tone.  No adjustments to the EQ seemed to do it for me.  Next time I'll see if I can try one on a different cab, maybe that'll do the trick.

Being heard wasn't an issue, the 2x10 was loud enough.  I just hated the tone.  Next time I'll see if I can try one of the other Markbass cabs, and if that doesn't do it I'll see if I can move one of the Markbass heads to an Ampeg cab or something.

The key with the LMII is using cabs other than Markbass.   I agree the heads and the cabs together sound like trash.  Try plugging up to something else in the store.

I went back to guitar center and saw some markbass stuff and found a head that was the size of a medium sized Bible and it was labled 600 watts at 4 ohms, now that's what I like.

I went to Guitar Center again today and.... MAN.  I took my time with the same LMII and F1 heads using the same 210 cab that I hated before.  I used a Stingray then too, I think.  Tweaked the settings and WOW!  The same setup that I absolutely HATED and couldn't get a decent tone out of sounded fantastic this time.

I also plugged the F1 in with an Ampeg 410.  Talk about booty, that setup was chocolatey goodness with lot of bump on the B string!  And at that size, I'm seriously thinking about trading in my entire rack for that head.  Carrying around that rack is more of a bother than I thought it would be.

LOL, well that GAS has passed.  It's kinda odd that it took so much to dial in a tone that I liked.  Anyway, my GK flexed it's muscles this weekend and proved it's worth, so it's not going anywhere.
