Anticipation
« on: January 28, 2008, 09:55:19 AM »
Can you hear what your playing before you play it? or do you just guess whats going to come out based on a muscle memory rudiment?

Respectfully speaking fam it's called "Intuition" The ability to know what works in a certain part of the song. It's just like being a running back! If he's sharp and always studies his craft he will always "See" it in his mind before it happens and, if he's really sharp he'll "See" and "Hear" it play out in his mind 20yrds. before it even happens. Because he knows what he's doing. And "Intuition" knows no professional just "Studiers" ;)

I like this commentary here! Keep it coming JHaynes. I grow from this kind of thought/wisdom/insight.

this is were im at in my development of my craft.  Everytime I practice I try to hear it " 20 yards.. lol" before I play it.  i think this is the next level in my playing.. Its all about choices and making a team effort. If you cant hear what your playing before you play it you cant respect your fellow musicians because you may be steppin out of bounds..

peace, J haynes.. give us some more

Awesome stuff said. For me, I can anticipate what needs to be done, although I sometimes can't execute. Boundaries seem to expand themselves when the right sacrifices are made.

I just listen. I always listen to whats going on around me in terms of the band, the level of energy and the overall atmosphere within the music being played. I listen and then react. Maybe I should try the "20 yards ahead approach." But for now, I'm a listen and react kinda player...for better or worse :-\
Just play music...

Steve Gadd is one of my fav drummers... He said he doesnt think about fills before a gig or a session. I find thats the best way unless you are playing a prog rock gig. In the studio I listen to the tune or its sent to me before hand and I map out the song, as for fills well I just do then as I feel.

I understand what your saying, but what Im talking about is the development of " intuition" in the sense of knowing what each part of your drums, cymbals etc. sound like before hitting them or knowing what a lick sounds like before applying it.  For example, I play the keys and been working on ear training. I allows me to hear a note or cluster of notes before playing it. This has helped me on the kit...

My man Bigblack!! is right also. Knowing the music always helps because when ur a studied musician of the music ur playing or band ur playing with, weither on a gig, session, or more importantly church!! knowing the music is veeeeery important. When im learning music i never sit at the drums and learn the music i always learn best while driving in my truck, or cleaning up around the house, or falling asleep with my headphones on. And what that does is ignites ur "Intuition" even more because now ur being sensitive to the music. And you've connected ur spirit to it. But knowing what to hit, when to hit, how to hit, making the music change when it's suppose to, making the mood change, the emotion and everything and evryone involved in the quest to deliver the music correctly is a great thing to master. Because once you do that, then ur always the guy that people want!!!!!!!

Not telling you what i heard, Telling you what i live!!!!!!!!!!

Stay Encouraged it will come "I Promise"

Yep agreed! Listening to the songs in everyday life without the drums brings you closer to the songs.. But that's if you can. Sometime I get so busy that Ill be learning the gig on the trip to the gig and on the way home learning the gig or session for the next day.

Oh dude that comes in time and with practise. The key word is training!!!! There's no way to fast track drums without putting in the time unless you're an MPC!!!

I couldnt agree more! Thats one reason why I love my boy Calvin Rodgers. You can tell he studies his songs, and not only that, but allows the song to sit in his spirit. For example on Vashawn Mitchell's song "Promises" you can't tell me that he wasn't feeling that! But honestly if you study a song, and allow it to get in your spirit everything, and even your own idea will fall into place.   Peace!                          P.S.- When the holy spirit takes over, there is no telling what you may do next.
