Organ Techs, HELP!!!
« on: February 12, 2008, 01:03:58 AM »
Last night I took my CV to the guy that bought it from me.  It was working just fine before we got it there.  Just as soon as we get it to his house and all hooked up, its starts making this funny noise when while starting, then when its on, the noise continues.  The best way to describe the noise is a winding noise, sounds like its coming from the generator.  If we bump the organ hard enough it stops.  Any Ideas.  My guess is while we were moving we shifted something that shouldn't have been shifted.  I DO NOT want to lose a sale over something that can be fixed.  Thanks

Chris

hey chris, does sound like the tone generator;those 4 big bolts on the bottom of the manuals (easy to see on a B3)  secure the generator when you move it.the generator "floats".try tightening them down.then loosening them -see if that helps.if that doesn't work-try finding JIC-one of the members who was a tech-very knowledgeable and cool guy.good luck, check your new b3,should have bolted your generator down;might need to loosen yours up.this is how we all learn pray 4 you

Yes, it was tied down, I figured that it may be the tone generator.  I tightened it some more when it was making the noise, I'll try to tighten and loosen it somemore to see what happens.

Anymore inputs???

I started to have him move it, but I was just trying to get it out the house before the wife changed her mind on the B3  ;D

I think you are suposed to tighten it when you move it, and loosen it when it's at the destination

The organ probably has to take quite a hit to break something if the tone generator isn't tied down.  I didn't tie mine down (only because I didn't know about it) and drove the organ in a moving van for 7 hours and it was fine when I got it home.   I would take a good look at the couplings between the the start and run motors and the tone generator and see if anything looks out of whack.  Did the seller play the organ at all before agreeing to purchase?  Just curious.

We only went right down the street and there are no pot holes because the streets are iced over.    Where are these couplings located?  Are you asking if I played the organ or the buyer?

The coupler is located between the shaft on run motor and the shaft on the tone generator.  I can't remember exactly how the start motor ties in, but you can take a look at the start motor too.  I was just asking if they buyer was able to verify the condition of the organ before agreeing to buy it.

Ok, I'll look for it when i get to his house today.  No, something told me (the holy spirit) to have him come by and test it out before we loaded it on the truck too!  I think he was just so excited about the price and I'm excited about my B3 that we both forgot. Lol.  I remember when i first bought the organ, I had the same noise, and all i did was play with the vibrato knob and oil it and it stopped and I haven't had the problem since then.

Taken from http://www.bborgan.com/helpfultips/beforeyoumoveyourhammond.htm

Before you move your Hammond Organ

Always, always make sure the Tone Generator is locked down before you move a Hammond Organ. When unlocked, the tone generator is suspended on springs in order to reduce the amount of  noise emitted by the generator. If you move the organ with the tone generator unlocked, it will bounce around, which can result in broken wires. Even worse, it could bang against other parts of the organ and the pickup rods can get bumped or bent. If a pickup bar gets pushed far enough into the tone generator, it could hit a tone wheel and keep that tone wheel assembly from spinning. It can also result in a permanently damaged tone wheel.

How to lock down the tone generator.

There are four bolts with T-shaped spacer and washer assemblies which bolt the tone generator to the shelf. Locking the generator is as easy as unscrewing the bolts, and flipping the spacer/washer assemblies over (see illustration below.)

Use a 5/16" nut-driver to tighten the bolts, as they have a tendency to work loose in transit.

Instead of the T-shaped spacer and washer assembly, some older organs have captive screws with large washers. Simply tighten the screws to lock-down the generator. To unlock the generator, simply unscrew them as far as they'll go.

Notes
Running your organ with the tone generator locked down won't damage anything, the organ will just be a little noisier. Many people never unlock their generators. Those people that move your organ on a regular basis should periodically check to make sure that the lockdown assemblies have not worked loose. If the organ is going to remain in one place, you'll probably want to unlock the generator.

If one or more tone generator lockdown spacer and washer assemblies are missing and you want to move the organ, they are available new.

Thanks for the info under13, I remember looking at this before I bought the organ for myself 2 years ago.  The generator is still locked from when I picked the organ up.

Take a look and let us know.  Hopefully it's nothing major.  There isn't much between the run motor and the T.G.   I was experimenting once trying to do that trick where you make the pitch slow down and speed back up.  Well it didn't work very well and the spring on that coupler started bouncing around.  I just shut the organ off before something got damaged.

Thanks, I emailed him and he responded.  "Oil It".  He also said it may take a couple days for the oil to reach the bearings. I also oiled it the night i took it over there.  And as of last night the noise stopped.  And The sale is COMPLETE.  I pick the B3 up on Friday.

Thanks for ALL who replied.  I'll post pics of the new toy.

Great!  I'm glad everything worked out.  Where do you plan to keep your B3?

I was going to take it to the home studio, but since we are moving next month I'll just take it to the church and keep it there.
