Organist worst nightmare!
« on: February 01, 2008, 09:06:03 AM »
Well maybe not the worst. But basicaly I go to start the organ up for choir practice last nite and it wont even start. you can hear it try to start, but when you let go of the second switch it just stops. So now I'm gonna be stuck using a roland juno for organ sounds till they get it fixed. It turns out that they havent had it serviced or oiled since they had it (7 years)

Why would you even play organ sounds on the Juno?  Just play piano IMHO

We have an XP-80 which the Pastor plays piano on, He said he would bring his roland juno. If there are no good organ sounds I'll just play stings or something :'(

We had that problem once it was weird. It turned out we needed a new scanner and we were going to get a new organ because it was going to cost so much for the guy to come but my dad just put a new one in and it cut the cost down alot!!!

yo ,have you checked tonewheel general hospitals site?  Rick seems to be a very knowledgeable and helpful guy;if the tone generator isn't destroyed/locked up;might get away with just oiling it.But!!!! get some competent advice from a tech(i'm not);if it just need oil -add some Hammond oil'may take 5-10 days to get into all the bearings, the on/off switch is another possible.good luck-pray and fast,LORD can restore even a mistreated B  be blessed  don't you have any local techs?

There was a little thing of oil in the bench, but I could not remember where it goes and I wasnt messin with it. I'll let them have a tech do it, cuz he needs to fix 1 of the pedals too, the 2nd F sounds even when you dont press it

I'll check out tonewheel general hospital,
Thanks Doc

Good advice.  It could be anything from a bad run switch, faulty run motor, or lack of lubrication.  Since it hasn't been serviced in many years, oiling it would be the first thing to do.  I'm sure the Leslie needs to be oiled as well.

Just for your information for when the organ is fixed:

Oiling is simple and should hurt a thing.  When you open the back of the organ, you'll see two metal/tin-like cups that funnel to the necessary organ parts.  Fill them up with Hammond Tonewheel Generator Oil to about 1/2 to 3/4  full and that's it.  The oil will empty out of the cups quickly so don't try to make them stay full.  Over-oiling will only cause more oil to leak out of the bottom of the organ and onto your feet.

Again, only use Hammond Tonewheel Generator Oil (accept no substitutes).  Anything else (olive oil, sewing machine oil, motor oil, anointing/holy oil, etc.) will cause BAD things to happen.

If the organ is used regularly, then oil it every 3-6 months, but you can really go up to a year without oiling it and the organ should run fine.  Those things were built to LAST.  When people say, "They don't make `em like they used to," they're talking about vintage Hammonds!

When you look at how the oiling system works, it's amazing that everything gets lubricated.

No, I have a worse nightmare. Try coming to church(late of course), turnig the organ on trying to be descrete, and have the thing catch fire after having complained to the trustee's for two weeks about the organ needing service. It got service alright, disposal service. I love my new C3. lol ;D ;D ;D

Wow!  Are you sure it wasn't arson?   ;D   Don't worry; we won't report you.  The organ I play at church was actually in a fire.  It's a wonder it still works and sounds great.  I proclaimed myself the organ tech because they really don't have the money to get it done.

That's good to know.  Fire is dangerous though.  Big T, for real though all you have to do is kick the organ with those feet of yours and it will stop working.    ;D

My worst nightmare was I had a night gig and the organ died no oil and when I got organ started the lesile died no oil in it.

Go figure.

Luckly my partner and I has spare hammond organ tubes and I had my tools.

Service had already started and I am dirty fixing the organ.

So by me being dirty and upset.

I'd show up and showed out
