FAT FOLKS IN MISSISSIPPI? NO WAY!
« on: February 05, 2008, 11:36:28 AM »
Have y'all heard about the new law they're trying to pass in Mississippi where restaurants can refuse service to anyone they think is obese?

They say they're doing it because people in Mississippi have the highest obesity rate in the country?

Doesn't this violate the Constitution and count as a form of discrimination?

I heard about a Buffet charging Fat obese people double. They claimed that some of them would eat up all the crab legs and other expensive seafood. I think a lot of people see "all you can eat" as a time to be greedy and eat til they get the Itus and cant walk.

I wish they would try to charge me more at a buffet.

Although it doesn't, I have a STRANGE feeling that our discrimination laws will now include the term "weight" in the near future.  ::)

Unfortunately, there are no laws to protect obese people. However, the EEOC has expanded the boundries of the ADA...Americans with Disabilities Act, to include obesity if it's because of a medical condition or morbidly overweight. Also, business owners often cling to the fact that they can reserve the right to refuse service to anyone.

I haven't heard of that in Mississippi, but I will say businesses will lose a lot of customers if they do refuse service...not to mention the public outcry.

I live in Mississippi and was totally floored when I heard about this.  A lot of the restaurant owners and planning to fight this if it does make it way to the house and senate.  This is ridiculous.  You can't make grown folks do anything that don't want to do.  You can't penalize grown folks for wanting to eat more than they should.  It has to be up to them not the government.

It's discrimination, but personally, I think a business owner should be able to refuse service to anyone they don't want to serve. Yes. I mean it fully.

I don't want to give money to anyone that don't want to serve me, and I don't want to force them to serve me either! I'd rather take my money somewhere else. If that doesn't speak, then so be it. The law should enforce crime (murder, battery, etc.), not people getting their feelings hurt.

Well isn't that what it means?  If not, then they should say "all that we want you to eat."  I'm a big man and I'm good for no more than 2 plates at the buffet now.  Back in the day I could get down, but now I just don't want all of that.  I just get my favorite things and enjoy it once or twice.  As far as the crab legs go, you have to eat more than one plate of those.  First of all, it isn't like you can put a lot of crab legs on those small plates at one time.  Second, when frozen crab legs can cost over $15-$20 in the store and I can eat my fill plus more for $8.99-9.99 you dat blame right that I'm gonna eat as many crab legs as I can.

As fat as this law, it aint right.  I've seen "skinny" people eat 4-6 plates at the buffet.  What about them?  Does that make it ok to eat everything up?
When you've done your very best, do even better.
