I'm sure you mean home practice amp meaning by your self with an ipod or a cd player. My answer is yes.

I think you can do better. MF has them for $129! Or you can get a Nemesis N8 40Watt 1x8 Bass Combo Amp for the same price of $129 at MF.

i bought my SWR LA12 (60 watts) used at guitar center for $150 a while back. hasnt failed me yet.

Also, check eBay and talkbass.com for used equipment. I bought my Crate off eBay for $80 including shipping.

In that size catagory, about 4.5 I bought an Ibanez sw35 combo. I have been tempted to sell it more then once. It's fairly loud and low for it's size as is most modern bass combos. A lil more then you were thinking.

I just finished practicing with it. It will handle a low B even at near full power. still allowing the "slap tone" to sound good.
