OH YEAH!?

Well you should be at the Black History program at GPHMBC every year when the lady over-dramatizes the "Story of Dr. Watt" and how he came up with that garbage musical artform.  ;D

In between every verse comes a dramatization, then they go into "take me through Lord" (the ever-more countrified version of "Walk Wit' Me Lord")!

AGONY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Lawd please let them skip over that this year.  I skipped it INTENTIONALLY the year I was chairperson.  Now I'm going in as a guest and I'll be at their mercy!

I can't stand a lot of Quartet songs because they all sound the same. Same progressions, same words, same everything!

I'm with ya on this one bruh... my only difference is that I can't mostly ALL Quartet singing.  It should be banned... black marketed!  :D :D

Lack of interest due to OVER SUNG/PLAYED:

"I Wont Complain"
"Never Would Have Made It"
"RAPHAAAAAA!!!! - The LORD that healeth thee!"

Okay...I once went to the House of Blues Gospel brunch, and their group came out with a bunch of 70's R+B songs with Gospelized lyrics....strange!

I can't stand that song by the Florida Mass Choir about the old lady that gets put out of her house and winds up on the park bench.  That songs offers no hope at all yet it was requested every day on the local gospel station here.

I like "Hope To See You There" by V. Michael McKay, but I can't stand to hear him sing it.  He makes my throat hurt.

I can’t stand most male chorus/quartet songs, with the exception of “I made it through another day’s journey God kept me here” other than that, down with quartet songs. (Speaking of, one of the male chorus members gone say to me yesterday “We still waiting on ya” I looked and said “waiting on me to do what”  :-\  ?/? and I started laughing.  I can do Dr. Watts meter hymns, before I can do quartet.

Anyway, right off the top, I can’t stand

Well you should be at the Black History program at GPHMBC every year when the lady over-dramatizes the "Story of Dr. Watt" and how he came up with that garbage musical artform.  ;D

If he hadn't come up with that "garbage" musical artform as you so "eloquently" put it, it would not have progressed into the current style of gospel music we have today. How someone could call something that praises God garbage is beyond me.

When I was little, I'd occasionally be forced to go with my grandma to church.  She went to one of those ol' Baptist churches like the ones the comedians make fun of, with Dr. Rev'um DoRight.  Dude had a Jeri Curl too I think.

Anyway, it seemed like everytime I went there some old dude would fire up this hymn that sounded like some sort of death march...

He'd be like "HH-IIIIIIIAAAAAAAYA KNOW DA LAWW'T, HE WEELLL AN'SA PRAYYAYAYAYAYAAAAAAA" and the rest of the congregation would join in moaning a slow-motion version of what he just said, one syllable at a time, each syllable lasting like a full 10 seconds at least...

HHiiiiiii-IIIIIIIIIIIIIII-AAAAAHHHHYAAAAAHHH...
(deep breath)
NNN-KNOOOOUUUUUUUUUUU-uw-WUUUUUUUHAAAAA
(deep breath)
Da'AAAAAHHHHHHHHH
(deep breath)
LA-HAAAAAAaaaAAAaaaAAAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWD
(deep breath)
WEEEEEEEEEE-uuuuuuuuuhhh-EEEEUHYUHHHHHHHHHHHLLLL...

...and so on and so on.  And there were MULTIPLE "verses" of this "song".  Good LORD that was ETERNITY for a kid.  They all sounded like the dead unearthed itself.  And I just sat there like "WHAT THE HAM SAMMICH?!?"

Well, that's how it played out in my young mind anyway.  I know someone in here knows exactly what I'm talkin' about.

The proper name for those is "Call and Response" hymns. We did one yesterday, we always do one for Black History Month, the congregation just eats that stuff up, I think they just want an excuse to wail and scream without being in the choir, lol. The stuff I don't like is some gospel rap. I realize that it's the new direction gospel is taking for future generations, but I just can't get into it. I also don't like most of Israel Houghton's stuff. I like "I am a Friend of God" and "We Worship You", but that's about it.

I can't stand that song by the Florida Mass Choir about the old lady that gets put out of her house and winds up on the park bench.  That songs offers no hope at all yet it was requested every day on the local gospel station here.

That's not the whole story. In a newer song, there's an update given about the old lady. After she gets on the park bench, some guy comes along from the government or something and gives her a house. See? The hope is there, I guess that was an attempt by the choir to "Soap Dramalize" gospel music. Also, have you noticed Shirley Caesar's new "Shouting John" has only aged 3 years, some 20 years after the original was released? lol.

I also got tired of that Shirley Caesar track (I say track cuz it wasn't really a song) about Shoutin' John... well, not so much that I was sick of the track, but moreso that I was sick of every ninja that ever listened to it talkin' about "HOL' MAH MULE!! HOL' MAH MULE!!"  Made me wanna tell them to shaddap and saddown.

I Liked that song. LOL I Love it when she says somebody say "yeah. say Yeah. Tell tha Lawd Yeessss!"

I'm gonna cosign two and add some more:

1. Cooling Waters ( ?/? ?/?)
2. Jesus, Jesus, Jesus by Timothy Wright & NYFC
3. Uzziah by Donald Lawrence & Tri-City (that song irks my tiniest nerve)
4. Shirley Caesar's No Charge

Just about any song with a spoken story (except Hold My Mule... I love that one)

1. the one where the lady has a car accident and goes to a stranger's house to ask for a closet, and goes in the closet and calls out to Jesus... ugh!

2. Carlton Pearson's one where Mother somebody asks him if he's yet holding on and gives him a quarter... ugh!

There's another one that I can't think of right now... I just hate all those story/songs...

Not that anyone asked, but one of my favorites in terms of lyrics is that one that Marvin Winans wrote for Twinkie Clark... she recorded it with FAMU, I think... isn't it funny, how we've all changed; why I remember if you weren't holy, in the choir, you couldn't sing; and now we go for almost anything... we've changed  The part I love is where she says why I can even remember when, women were women, men were men, and now you can't hardly, you you you can't hardly, you you you can't hardly tell a her from a him....  :D :D :D (it's so funny to hear her do the runs and riffs in that classic Clark style...)
When you're in love you don't want to fall asleep bc reality is finally better than your dreams.

Tonex and Shirley said "You tellin' lies, but I know the truth, we off to the Grammys!" in that song. Well, did they make it? I don't think they did. :o
