Great question!  I do know that the late great "C.L. FRANKLIN really made the hoop famous within the baptist church.  Bishop Cole

Cogic preachers do it like an art form. It looks so easy to them. Then they have the nerve to modulate. Wow.

They say that church was the first place where african americans could express. And whats more expressive than a preacher and an organist delivering a sermon togather

I thought only Musician preachers did that...LOL. Those that modulate accidently is because they can't just stay in one key.

C.L. may have made it famous but I'm sure he wasn't the first to do it... Most American institutions, traditions, and myths were invented by everyday people that didn't get to coin a particular phrase, talent or new way of doing something. (culture) I'm willing to bet that there were a lot of preachers doing it when C.L. was growing up. You got to remember that Franklin was one of the first preachers to record his sermons.. Adam Clayton Powell, James Baldwin, and even Al Sharpton were known as fiery preachers who could hoop. Baldwin was a child prodigy in the preaching game... So hoopology is deeper than one person getting the credit. I believe the person that probably did it first was an old slave in the fields that preached while the overseer made sure he wasn't inspiring people to escape. He probably had to give a show while he preached so that the overseer who had to miss his traditional worship that Sunday could be entertained..... Just a theory.

I've witnessed some give the thumbs up sign to modulate, and or yell out the key he wants to go to and keep on a whooping.  lol  My mom's pastor modulates sometimes, now if it's because he can't stay in the same key or not I don't know. lol

That my dream, to back up Rev Al Sharpton on the organ :D

If you've been playing with a preacher for a while, you will know exactly when He needs to modulate

Right! Thank the Lord my pastor don't do all that.  Don't even get me started on whooping, cause some get out of control with it and it gets on my nerve.

Baptist Boy about to get in trouble.

I tell you the timing of some of these threads just amazes me.....

I have been so irritated the last few months because I guess I have become discontent with the whole hooping thing. It seems lke a circus show. I sit in church and I watch ( particularly men and other preachers) get so excited when another preacher starts whooping. I watch them throw rags, jump up, make motions to each other when the man of God who is preaching does some run or whatever. I have even watched men go up to the pulpit or stage and motion for the preacher to give them one more whoop. :-\

I guess I wonder is it the spectators who are shallow ( only because they don't ever act like that unless the preacher is into the who whoop thang) or is it the preacher because he or she is catering to the urging of the audience fro them to holla and whoop.

As an example I was at a church and this little preacher went into this whoop and the minute he kicked his foot up onto the pulpit stand and left it up there while he whooped, folks jumpped up out of there seats and got so animated. They were hi-fivin and all of that off of the little acrobats he did. I don't know but it just did not seem to be God getting the glory....

Man,
CL Franklin was NO JOKE! I had no idea how good he was.
Just listening to that clip just seems like he laid a template that many are still using today.
