Since your limit is $500 you may have to settle for a combo which is not bad it's just not the best thing possible.
Unless you can find a used head/cab for $500.

If all I hade was $500 and I was looking for a head and cab, this is what I would do.

Another tip.  Hit up your local pawn shops.  You may find a gem in the rocks.  Sometimes these shops don't know what they really have.

I am in the same place you are, norman. College students are not the only ones on a budget.  So are those of us with families!

If I can find a head and cab for $400-$600 that would be great.  I am checking eBay and the classifieds in talkbass.com.  One thing that you may consider is the type of player you are.  If you play a lot of solos and runs on the higher strings, then look for something with 10" speakers. But if you are more of a pocket player you might go with 12's or 15's.

The pawn shops around here (Baltimore,Md) they have no idea what they have. A used (rough around the edges) 25watt 10inch speaker Crate combo was being sold for about $200. The Peavey Fury that I bought my father 6 years ago for $125 is sill sitting there for $350. It's just me.

You might find something your looking for.

IMHO, pawn shops price their items looking for maximum profit from a customer base that may not have price information.

That's very true, but sometimes you can find something that they just really want to get out of inventory.  That's where you find a serious deal.

For instance, I once found a 4-string Tobias bass at a local pawn shop.  They only wanted $400 for it.  The only reason I didn't get it is because it wasn't a pre-Gibson model.  Needless to say, it wasn't there very long.
When you've done your very best, do even better.

I did some research on this amp. It has a 15" speaker but no horn.  How do you think that will work for highs?
