Perfect or Absolute Pitch

Can it be developed?  I am looking for ways to do so.  I knew of a guy who had it.  I always was mystified by how he can just pull a note out of thin air.

There are some people who can train voice, but it is not a gift that all musicians, myself included, possess.

I don't know...wish I had it. All I can do is give you Middle C and go up an 8ve from that, but maybe that is the trick. Hmm...

I've seen programs on the NET that say it can be taught.  I am not sure about buying that stuff....

It is believed that Perfect/Absolute pitch cannot be developed (a gift you either have or don't), but who really knows...all things are possible...However, Relative Pitch can be developed through practice and ear training.

I illuded to this in another post, but most are under the impression that perfect pitch is just being able to recognize a note without hearing a relative note, it actually more of being able to recognize the "frequency" of a note with no other reference...for example if an instrument was out of tune, sure someone with relative pitch may be able to recogize it was out of tune, but they most likely could not get those notes to the exact frequency they need to be for the instrument to be in perfect tune.

Be careful of anything that promises that it can teach anybody to sing like a proffessional. That's a scam right out of the box.

I dont think I'll need perfect/relative pitch, but I'm still gonna try to obtain it.

But when I'm sitting at the organ it seems like I have perfect pitch.

Where it would help me is in the ability to name a chord upon hearing it.  And, also develop a good recall.  I think that it would be great to be able to give a note or hear a chord and be able to tell exactly what it is.  I mean most of us can hear a minor or diminished when it is played but can we name the chord exactly?  That is what I want.

One of the issues when I play is that sometimes I just cannot "hear" the chord that is being played.  I may come close but not hit it on the head.  It is a source of frustration personally for me.

That is Relative Pitch and you can develop that through practice and ear training...there are some websites, and I believe someone posted a link to a free site a few weeks ago, where the site plays different chords/notes to train the ear...I'll see if I can find it.

Don't send away for any "Perfect Pitch" courses. Develop your musicianship instead....

My boy can. They actually teach that at Morgan State Univ....
Ear training was a class he was taking...
While we were shedding he was naming the chords and notes.....
He got some and missed some but practice will make perfect or close to it....

I think hear and play has ear training stuff..

It comes from having
a great ear....

and having the ability
to hit whatever it is that you hear
in your head.

It can be taught...
But it can't be perfected
unless you already have it
on the inside.

What do you recommend?  I hear the it can be developed. 

For me; Im going to try the program. Not now, but later. Right now Im just picking up different stuff on my own. Takes longer, but Im studying other things right now, to where I wouldnt want to add that to my list presently.

I honestly believe you have to be born with perfect pitch.  But, if it can be learned, I bet it takes a whole lot of ear training and mental power to remember the sound of each note.

My understanding is that, everybody is born with it, but you only retain it if you becom a musician at an early age (3-5 yrs)
