My Audio Demo of Luen Snare Drum Head!!!
« on: February 25, 2008, 07:44:16 AM »
Ok fam!  Here it is!  Audio of the Luen!  The  Akira Jimbo with the 13" grey premium coated single ply model and two moon gels (for this particular recording preference.)  Remember to pm BEATBOXERZ to place your special order, which is exclusive to the LGM fam so take advantage of the opportunity to add a great sound to your drums that no one else will have!  I'm going Luen on the entire kit real soon!

The music is from Kevin Powell's myspace page.  The song is titled, "Spanky Track!"  He is straigt up killin this joint too!  I'm not really used to playing to tracks so my feel has to develope more, but I hope you all enjoy what I had to say (musically.)  This is also my first recording on the new gear.  As I figure out more about it, the sound will get much better.

Here's the link   http://download.yousendit.com/83DE702D2C91137F

This is my new recording set up (no pics as of yet, but coming soon)

Work-station:  Yamaha AW1600

Drum mics:  Shure (1) PG81 over head mic, (3) PG56 for the toms, (1) PG52 for the bass drum, and (1) Audix D1 for the snare drum

Sennheiser Headphones and (2) KRK RP-5 Rokit Monitors

This is a very basic recording set up.  If you are looking to get started (as a drummer) to have your own recording gear, this set-up will run you no more than $2000.  The workstation is also portable which allows you to take it to a church and overdub organ tracks.  You could also use this gear to record a trio or quartet in a live situation and make some extra dough!  Then you become a drummer/engineer.  I figure we can make ourselves more valuable to the music industry as drummers.

Anyway, holla at me for any questions fammo!   :)

I like it. I like the Punch of your snare. It cuts but it does it in a very warm manner. Good overall mix of your kit.

You get a thumbs up brother.

That head sounds good on the Jimbo mang.

Keep doing what you do.

OK after hearing it for a 3rd time I still dig it. However, I would like to hear you stretch out a bit more. We all know you have a pocket, Give a little more of your flavor to these tracks. I was waiting for a "Sheen" fill at some point or another and didn't get it.

Yeah, Mane!! You sound good, Chief! The mix is nice. People sleeping on dem der PGs. We use those at my church, but with an SM57 on the snare, and the recordings always sound SO GOOD!

If you ever want to try something new, check out the Digital Reference DR-DRM7 mic package. It's only $200 (4 tom mics, 2 overheads, 1 kick mic), but they sound good!! I just recorded 2 studio projects with these. To me, they sound better than the PGs. But the PGs are killer, too.

Sounding good, man. And I like your less is more approach to this song. To say that you don't usually play to tracks, you did what a seasoned drummer would do... you stayed where you knew you would sound right, and you played musically. Good job, Kid!

Me likes the playing. The snare.........not so much.  :D

It could be my office speakers, but I was not hearing much "warmth" from the snare. Keep in mind I did set the EQ to flat, but they are still cheapo speakers.

I do love a tight, yet un-choked snare, but still there has to be a warmth under the pop. Just my opinion. You're playing, still has me drooling though.

Hey DOD!!!!
I must say that i really love the sound of your snare!!!
Its almost were i would say it is perfect!
Your Toms sound wack though! Not the drums but in the mix the toms were somewhere but not where the rest of the set was.
But for the equipment youve used you did a very good job!!!
Playingwise i must say i enjoyed it!
As i mentioned when we spoke earlier: Your sound is somehow different than the sound of most of the "normal" gospelcats.

Hit me up in a PM

Got news for ya ;)

Sorry but these are the first drum mics I've ever owned so I dont have much to compare to.  And thanks everybody for the feed back!  Like Baldeagle said, I was definately trying to play it safe.  I will be playing to tracks more often now and Im really in the dinosaur stages of getting the most from the work-station.  So stay tuned for improvements!  lol  But yeah thanks again my peeps!

What happened to this: http://www.learngospelmusic.com/forums/index.php/topic,53295.0.html

Are we thinking "drumistically", or musically?  I feel that Kevin was playing with the latter in mind - essentially, he was thinking about the music as a whole, instead of what cool fills he could place into the track (read: he was thinking about the music, and not the drums).
