After recording one piano part, and a bass part to a song.......STILL NOT ENOUGH MEMORY to move on to the drums! WHAT IS GOING ON?!? Someone please help me!

I don't have PT but I know you going to need more than 1GB of memory at least 3 GB of memory will do the trick.

The external hard drive size doesn't have anything to do with memory error you are recieving...see ddw's solution above.

I have 1GB on my PC just to provide enough memory for the actual software. But I record all of my music onto my external hard drive (500GB). After making a few adjustments to my preferences everything seem to work just fine now.I adjust my recording limits, buffer size, and etc. Thanks a lot though guys!

The size of the hard drive is not the issue...the physical memory and other settings need to be adjusted for some programs that are labor intensive.  500GB or 80GB internal/external hardrive only hold the CPU OS & hardware drivers/software and files that you may save, but it has nothing to do with the Random Access Memory (RAM).

I'm sure he can give you a better answer than I as to the exact fix on his system, since he fixed it...

I've noticed that running Pro Tools on Windows requires a bit more tweaking to run smoothly than running PT on a Mac... But it runs fine on Windows XP with 1 GB RAM for me, using 48 tracks, and the drive I'm recording audio to is not the system drive i.e. the C:\ drive. I have had good reliability using firewire external hard drives, and also with WD internal hard drives.

Hello, at some time you need to upgrade to a Mac.(if you can) Protools run better on Mac computers. This is a known fact. I have an IMac 2.0GHZ core 2 duo, IGB memory and 250 GB hard drive. I have an external firewire 250 GB drive and every thing works fine. I have recorded over ten tracks in one session and have no problems. Also you should only use your computer for your music. I have a PC that I do all my business on, surfing the wed and downloading.
