Harmonization.
« on: March 22, 2008, 10:35:28 PM »
I was in rehearsal today and we were playing a song. The keyboard player was playing the song and I was on the organ. Something was just not matching to me. I kinda knew the song. I was playing with the drawbars and trying to adjust my chords. The song sounded alright with one instrument by itself and the choir but together something just was there. Im now on youtube listening to the song. Dudes harmonization was off. He was juicing up the song too much.

Well MM, I know that you already know that you will have to lay back and straight pad with regular chord changes within that song just to break even. This will combat that problem until you tell him or her to 'STOP BEING SO BUSY' through out any or every song that yall minister in song Doc!!  AND THATS A RAPP!!  Bishop Cole

The song was why do you cry. Im listening to the rehearsal now on my digital recorder. He wasnt necessarily busy just a couple of places he used substitutions so I played a few chord shells over them. Substitions are nice but I could see it was throwing the choir off from their voice parts. I will record tomorrow if I go.

Yes, I know that song! this song has to be done very graceful! It is basically piano. Make sure that you tell that person to be careful not to overplay in the wrong spots tommorrow.  Bishop Cole

Here's a clip of service. Forgive the dude on the organ. :D He was trying to find his way. Things turned out alright. Give me some critic on the whole thing.

I think the keyboard guy was way too busy and some of his voicings were kinda "strange" for the song.  It was kind of annoying, but overall it wasn't too bad.

I don't really understand what's up with the organ MM what is it that you were hearing? it felt more like the keyboard wasn't giving him too much room to work in because an organ player's gotta fill in that pocket right?

It was a joke. I was on the organ. That was a good day. He tones down sometimes and at times he goes out in left field. So I play harder than I normally would in service. I play around more on midi files I post online.

Man! You guys are crazy! I'm dissenting!

The only "off" thing I heard was at 9:04-9:07. I'd play that about the same, probably with a little more fills!!! ;D ;D

I, personally, think you're being too hard on him for this song. You guys need to sit down and shed together. At a couple points I felt the organ should have gotten louder, especially when they broke, but that's me. Towards the end it seems as if he went from playing with the choir to comping, which is OK, but then the organ should take over to play "with" the choir. While the piano is playing with the choir, the organ should be padding or comping. That way you don't run over each other. He played with the choir for most of the song. The only thing he needs to work on is not holding onto those off chords too much. He only did it a couple times though, playing the major chord, instead of the normal diatonic.

This time I was on the keys. :D I was in a mood then. He was blasting the organ before then so I really couldnt hear myself that night even though it picked up on the recorder. So I just played what ever all over the keys. Usually when I do something like that he will go out in left field. Like you said I tried to stick to the song. If you listen closely there is a point where we are playing two different things.

Im going to take a digital camera with me. Only problem it has an SD card and I never tried to use it to record videos. And Im not sure how many hours I can get. We'll see how that goes. I may just try to get NJ to bring his VHS camera.

Ok. Reverse everything I said then. Change all the "you"s to "he"s. I heard the part where it was different, but I didn't comment on it, because I didn't want to seem like I was blasting you. ;D ;D ...but since you said it wasn't you... ;D ;D

I had to listen to it a couple times, I thought he was in a totally different key. He was playing out of key on parts. If he was playing by himself then it would be OK, but since he's in a band, he should've held that back...unless you two worked out what to do in that case. I would've just tapped octaves if he did that on me though....to keep the music from sounding off.

;)

B3, you are soooo right. The organ player was WAY TOO BUSY!! MM, I know that you were probably mad because he was so way out there!! In cases like this, all you can do is just switch places in your patterns in music. Just let him lead and you cover him. I know that this wrong, but until you can show him correctly, this is what you will have to do Doc!!  I pray that this helps!  AND THATS A RAPP!!!  Bishop Cole
