« on: March 07, 2008, 02:40:36 PM »
Im new at playing bass, matter of fact I can only play by seeing chords. im trying to learn the tabs which are not that hard (just wish they all had lyrics) I need some exercises, and some of the more important scales, I play for my church, and its not small average 700 weekly, glory to God, but I want to be better and not rely on just the sheet with chords, I feel like im missing out on the full bass patential. Help!? Please :)

Welcome to the Site.

Pick up Bass Guitar for Dummies, it is very thorough, and a great investment, I recommend it to all beginners.
Also check out Gospelbasslines.com...  (yet another shameless plug), I have put a few videos together.

Im starting to get a better feel for the bass, I know my top two stings fine "E, A" but I have no idea when to use my other stings, the main reason is; is that we have never used tabs at the church for the bassist, the last two are so good, they dont ever need music, they can read it and hear it, but now hes playing the electic guitar, so all i ever play is the notes, I feel as though I can only go so far unless I learn how to do something else. any words of wisdom?

Torch's site gospelbasslines.com has some of that fundamental stuff up there. also there is some stuff here in the LGM forums, u probably have to search though.

you can use the D and G strings any time you can use the E and A strings. you'll just be playing notes in a higher range. also what you can do is when you play a note on the E string play its octave on the D string. likewise with the A and G strings.

once you learn your major scales and you know where your intervals are, you can use the intervals on different strings.
For my God... let "Golden Axe" prevail.
