The whole Quality vs. Quantity conflict will always be present amoungst musicians. I think the results are different for everybody. One guy would rather a longer practice time. Someone else will want a shorter slot with more of a game plan on how to use that time. In either instance, we know that practice makes perfect. The question is, "What are we practicing"? I persoanlly have grown attached to a more focused practice time. Why? Practicing for a shorter amount of time has challenged my memory. If I can only practice twice a week for 30 min per session, I have to be able to retain what I've learned until the next available time. I've seen the benefit on gigs where I only have 1 rehearsal, IF I get 1 rehearsal. On the other hand, I could see the benefit of practicing longer....REPETITION. People learn different ways.

...but you see, that's the thing that the writer talks about.  Practice doesn't make Perfect.  "Perfect Practice" makes "Perfect".  There are a bunch of cats that are constantly practicing things wrong for a large quantity of hours.  Now all they are doing is improving their mess. lol

...if I remember correctly, I think it was Tommy Igoe that states that you get "0" points for playing things badly. lol

...on the other hand, we should have some goals set and a game plan before we step into the practice room.  That way we're not blowing time or practicing things we already do well.  That's why we don't get better or see improvement.  (Yes, myself is mos def included)

...I'm telling you, get the Mag....read the article and lets discuss this thang for real. 8)

Exactly!! I have to get on myself about wasting practice time. It's so easy to sit down and thrash for 3 hrs. and accomplish nothing. Thats why having goals for myself and MASTERING those goals have been sooo valuble to my practice time!!!

...yeah but according to the article, instead of "creating & exploring"  ;) for 3 hours, we should do it at the beginning of our practice time for only 15 - 20 mins.  That way we get it all out of our system and then we can focus on the rest of the practice regiment.

...I just got done reading the Jeff Sipe article.  He states that when he graduated from Berklee he new many cool licks and patterns but his timing was horrible and his grooves were weak.  He adds that he spent a lot of time working on exercises but not working on making music "feel" good and the simplicity of it.  That's why he would audition for bands and would not get hired for a while because he needed to practice on developing a groove and he needed to get his "timing" up.  Man, his article is very good.

...I can't wait for yall cats to read this stuff so that we can keep on discussing something productive. 8)
