Basic theory of chords from organman88

Many musicians ask me how do i know when and where to put these phat chords and i tell them you have to know your theory.
Chords just don't magically appear the chords have to be apart of the scale you are playing in and the notes of the chords have to be in the scale.
Ok for the Major scale the most important because all scales are altered froms of the major scale.
The triad chords to the major scale of any key are
1 major
2 minor
3 minor (in gospel this is major only going to the 6)
4 major
5 major
6 minor
7 diminished

The 7th chords of any key of the major scale are
1 major 7
2 minor 7
3 minor 7 or dom 7 (mainly in gospel going to the 6)
4 major 7
5 dom 7
6 minor 7
7 dim7

Now this is where the phat chords come in say if you do a 2 5 1 progression knowing the 2 is minor the 5 in dom7 and the 1 is major 7
knowing chord theory you can substitute a minor 11 flat 5 sharp 9 for the minor 2 instead of a simple minor triad but be careful the chords have to fit the context of the song in other words the melody line must be the highest note of the chord and even if the melody of the note is on top the dissonant note in between can clash with the singers so you have to experiment also! ;)
