To borrow or not to borrow......
« on: April 23, 2008, 05:17:43 PM »
Ok so, a lot of people know that im ugrading my cymbals and set of snares slowly but surely. I have a pair of 13" AAX Fusions(I was gonna get Byzance Brilliant Fast Hats but didnt wanna mix brands) coming in by thursday or friday and i have a vault crash from sugabear, these are the only two high end cymbals i own currently.  Most of the time when a certain church in the area has a big event goin' on their main drummer comes back to participate, they usually ask me to borrow some of my equipment. Check this, i asked the MOM of the church a while back to borrow their stuff but denied because "they're so worried about people breakin' stuff". There's also some other cats in the area that might ask me and but their technique is poo-poo. My question is should i let any of these ppl borrow some of my stuff? I know for a fact that they'll be like, "dude you trippin'" or whatever and probably want to start an argument.  Call me stingy or selfish but when i get more high end cymbals i dont want anyone to borrow them because they lack the knowledge of what striking a cymbal the incorrect way or droppin' it on its edges can do. I had a shed at my church a while back and one dude had a crappy cymbal stand and had another dudes Stagg cymbal on it and it dropped and rolled on its edge and everyone was laughing but i was like......... ":o :-\thats cymbals through after a while."

Sorry for the lengthy "testimony". What would you all do in this situation?

I would say no. Especially for he church. The church administration is responsible for the church program/equipment. If they will not buy the appropriate quality equipment their loss on trying "fake it" by borrowing. On top of that they won't allow you to borrow equipment because  they are worried about damage... Are you not concerned about damage to your gear? The borrower is a slave to the lender.

If you do decide to allow anyone to borrow your gear have them sign a contract to return it in the same or better condition (polished, new heads with your old heads returned to you) else they assume responsibilty for full replacement value for any and all damage incurred while the gear is in their possession. As well this replacement needs to occur with 7-10 days... no more than 30 days. Else they go rent from a sound/backline company or local drumshop.

Folks have to learn to respect a musician, his/her value and personal investments in their craft.

Kits rent for $250-500 per event.

You need to look into renters insurance or have your parents to in order to protect your gear's replacement value in case of accidental damage even away from home.

I Chron 21:24
And king David said to Ornan, Nay; but I will verily buy it for the full price: for I will not take that which is thine for the Lord, nor offer burnt offerings without cost.

Pretty much a common sense situation here again.

I let my friends borrow gear all the time. Just tell them up front what the requirements are (date you need them back, if a head is jacked up they replace, cymbal crack they replace, etc...).

Dude, if their your friend, by a friend!

I'm down with what Sabe said about the contracts if you don't know them. But why the heck would you loan out gear to someone you don't know?

Common sense! If they suck, NO. If they are under 18, NO.

Man let them be responsible for getting their own gear in a situation like this, if the MOM told you know then he already know what it is dude, so don't forfeit your hard earned gear for some busters to come bang it out and go home happy and you're sad because Vault crash got a chunk ripped out of it, thats whack....
Do what you do, but do it well!!!
