Ovation Gee-tars
« on: April 23, 2008, 10:04:50 AM »
I am thinking of getting an Ovation or Applause gee-tar. I think that, at my current skill level, i am worthy of one.  ;D ;D

But i needed to know what the hype was about these gee-tars. I played one in the G-Center and it sounded great and all, but i wanted to get feed-back from you guys on what made the Ovation such a special guitar.

Thanks.

i'm not a fan of ovation guitars at all....but that's just my opinion. i'd much rather have a Taylor or Breedlove.

ive got an ovation celebrity thats been busted for a few months now. currently in the shop...

before it got damaged, i loved it. sounds heavenly thru a fender acoustasonic amp. fitted with light gauge strings.

visually, it looked good and obviously unique to others when you pull it out. sonically, great. kinda bright...but if you're playing RnB type stuff which is what i was doin, sounds good. im not playin a lot of CCM type chords or anything, so if you are, you may want to go with a fuller sounding guitar.

cons - the rounded bowl back means that you pretty much ALWAYS have to wear a strap. even if youre sittin on the couch at home, without the strap its gonna slide down.

con - the finish on top of the wood on the front is going to chip, especially around the edges. gonna be kinda unsightly, but it doesnt diminish the sound.

tech called yesterday n said it'd be 120 bucks to repair. what happened was the wood top and the lycra bowl separated at the binding on one of the bottom curves of the guitar. one store told me that the woods constant expansion due to temperature versus the bowls non expansion since its pretty much plastic...eventually worked themselves apart. thats kinda far fetched, i may have just been mishandling it tho.

I wouldnt say its far fetched, This time of year when the seasons change, many instruments get out of tune etc due to the different woods expanding at different rates

You know i did notice that the sound of the Ovation was thin compared to a regular dreadnought guitar sound. I play CCM so i don't know that i want such a thin sounding guitar after all.

I've never played an Ovation that I would consider buying.
I don't like the bowl shape and I don't dig the tone overall.
For me, Seagull makes the best bang for the buck instruments in acoustics.

when the ovation busted. i had to get something else cuz we were still doin the acoustic sets. this is what i ended up with.

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Yamaha-FGX730SCA-FG-Series-Acoustic-Electric-Guitar?sku=513388

didnt pay full price tho, but it was new. its an acoustic/electric and i really dig the sound. let a guitar buddy of mine gig with it and he was impressed with the sound on it. i honestly think its a great guitar, but then again im not a big fan of the martins n taylors etc. i dont know what it is, but they dont do anything for me.

only thing with acoustics...the proof is kinda in the aging. put mine up against a martin or something 15 years from now, i suspect that the martin will definitely show its worth. dont think the yamaha will lose anything tho, spruce top with rosewood back n sides. shud age gracefully (fingers crossed).

Please go on my web site and read about Ovation...at http://jordanriversguitarforum.blogspot.com/
If you want the best Acoustic sounding guitar in the world...Ovation is it.
Here's the truth about Guitars........Every Company makes thier Top End Guitars...they also have their Mid road guitars for people who can't afford top dollar......next...every company has cheap guitars....even Martin and Taylor as well as Ovation.
So..........what are we talking about here...........you want a great Ovation Guitar..........well............you can get a $1999.00  Ovation LX 1777.....now for only $1395.00 at Musicians Friend, which is part owner of also the Guitar Center.......so you might want to talk to the Guitar Center also, because I got mine at the Guitar Center 3 years ago.
Here's what you get........without doubt....Ovation LX 1777 is the worlds fatest playing guitar...(Besure to have the strings of choice you want put on the guitar and have the store set the guitar neck for those strings)....anyways...this Ovation LX 1777 is the best neck on any guitar bar none.....next, forget what people say about the rounded back....these guitars only fall off your lap if you're FAT !!..................yes I said fat.....that's no inslut........I have done tons of concerts with my Ovation....and when I play acoustic..I never use a strap I sit on a Bar stool.....and for 25 years of owning 2 top Ovation guitars.....I never had one fall off my lap.........I never put a strap on it....and I would never junk up a guitar like this with a strap....Look at Eric Clapton ..when he plays his Martin, you never see a strap...acoustics are really meant to be played sitting down.....The Ovation is slick and fast...the tone is awesome......besure you use Martin light Light Gauge - .012 to.054 and these strings are also called 80/20 Bronze guitar strings. They give the best balance and full sound of any strings on the market.
Also...the strings that come with the new Ovations are not the best strings, so it may be hard for you to figure out what string to use........well I just told you.
....... Here's the scoop.....Ovation records better than Martins or Taylor Guitars.
The price is half as much. The sound from the guitar I mentioned is better balanced than Martin or Taylor.......sure I know what guitar players here will say........Martin is the best....... NO NO NO....
Here's why.........Ovation guitars get better with age.........the sound starts to Deepen at about 18 months after you buy it.........next at about 3 years out, your guitar sounds so good, you could stack it up against the best Martin Guitars, even 20 to 30 years older........I have owned my first Ovation a Deep Bowl Back since 1983.....I still have it........it records great.....I have ..Never seen a Martin Guitar...or a Taylor out play my 25 year old Ovation........I bought it new, I have seen the Guitar age and get better with age.
Now lets go back many years ago, when Jim Croce played, he used deep bowl Back Ovation Guitar, to this day, I have never heard a better sounding guitar.........now Jim wasn't the greatest player in the world by far, but what I am talking about, is the sound of his Ovation Guitar....Jim also PLayed Martins.....and in his concerts years ago he'd would change guitars.....his Ovation was 30 % better sounding than the Martins he played.
Now get this.....his Ovation recordings are... still better recorded years ago, than 99.9 % of all top end recording studios today that use digital....the reason why, the Ovation was just that much better.
Now here's my take on the sound of a Top Ovation and a Top Martin ...brand new, it's possible the Martin may sound slightly better during the first year....... but I am telling you, after 3 years, the Ovation comes to life !!....something happens and it ages.....at 3 years out, an LX 1777 will hands down be better than the Martin by 25 %.....because the Ovation has better over all Balanced sound from all the strings, and once the wood starts to age......look out........I know the Martin will age also, but ....just not as perfect as the Ovation LX1777.
I have to tell you, when I buy a new Ovation, I take it home for 3 years, break it in, then I'll use it in concerts, people always ask how did I get my sound........secret is, I use no Chorus's, No Flange, just a  Peavy Eq Unit, and very small touch of reverb...so small is the Reverb you can hardly hear it......and plug into my Fender Tube amp.....or sound system.
But.....the main secret behind, my acoustic sound......yes...you guessed it OVATION.......
Go on my site and read how I record the Ovation guitar.....
http://jordanriversguitarforum.blogspot.com/
Now I know this is getting long winded my writing, but I want you to think about getting a great guitar... forget about the cheaper Ovations, you will not be happy with a Celebrity made by Ovation, they are too shallow, get a deep bowl, and hold out till you find one.
It's worth saving your money, to get a great Ovation...........I remember 27 years ago, I was broke and on the radio with my music, I only had a Epiphone guitar, YOu'd think I'd get rich with my music playing in 33 states in the USA...right....well, I had a little money, but it covered the bills,so.....I spent 2 years saving every penny to get my first Ovation..........It WAS WORTH THE WAIT !!.........If you want that dream guitar, SAVE.....SAVE....Save....because in the long run , you will not be happy with anything less.
Also don't buy the Applause, you will not be happy, they do not play the same.

OK....I know all the Martin and Taylor guys will go nuts reading this........so be it........But Ovation Top End GUitars are AWESOME......The eletronics are the best, I have seen a Martin guitar at Guitar Center going for  3600.00 , and I'd still take my LX1777 over that Martin.

In other words......you someone walked up and said to me.......I'll give you a FREE Martin 4000.00 guitar, or you can buy the Ovation LX1777.....but you mjust take one guitar only to play for the next 25 years.........it's a NO Brainer............I'd pay for the Ovation LX1777......I hope Martin Guitar Company read this !!....they make a good guitars, but still they are not good enough.... and they charge too much for the name.

C ya...  GW Williams   The ex...Jordan Rivers.......Ok people go at it..........tear apart my message.....But a few years ago if you didn't own a Ovation, studio's wouldn't record you......I wonder how many people remember this !!
I think Ovation will make a huge come back soon, it just needs a few famous people playing them in concerts and on CD's again. The young kids all want to be like the stars of today, and they try and find those types of guitars to be like he stars.
Most people think of Glen Campbell playing an Ovation or David Cassidy of years gone by......and todays young people don't know who those old timers are now.
Maybe some one reading this will rediscover the Ovation.........
                      Because....It's a Dream to own

Oh.....one more thing I forgot to add...............I never had an Ovation Break.....never in 25 years have I had any trouble with the electronics on my old Ovation, and I never had any trouble with anything on my 3 year Old LX 1777 Ovation, they are built to last, if you go to the guitar center, look for a great Ovation, but it's going to cost at least 1395.00 or more.........take it and compare it to Martin or Taylor.......I did and my wife responded, there's no comparing them..........she said hands down, Ovation is KING !!

Again.....are you playing a Cheaper Ovation Guitar........A great Ovation is fuller than Martin or Taylor hands down.
All companies...Taylor, Martin , and Ovation Make cheaply designed guitars......yet all 3 of these companies also make the top 3 guitars in the world......depends on what your bank account will afford......

Like Ovations a little, eh? :D

Really, I do love the sound of the Ovations. I wouldn't use the cheaper Shallow Bowl Ovations for a spittoon, but the Deep Bowls are FABULOUS!!! I play an Epi acoustic right now, but my next acoustic (unless a deal falls in my lap) will be an Ovation. I have a friend with one and the first time I heard it, I nearly fell off my stool. Then again, he can make my Epi sing like it's worth way more than the $100 I paid for it (deal fell in my lap  ;)).

the celebrity i have is actually a deep bowl back. ive heard the shallow bowls and they are harsh sounding.

i dont think you've got to spend uber bucks on ovation to get a good sound. when it gets fixed, ill post a video or somethin maybe showing him first hand what my lil cheapo-slidin off my fat stomach-shouldnt need a strap-how the heck'd it break guitar sounds like.  :D

I have to say.......a nice Ovation has awesome sound, you can really hear the difference, just take 1 chord and strum across the strings just 1 simple time.........and you hear that great quality sound !!
With a Top Ovation Guitar you know what your getting every time. Each Ovation in the top end sounds exactly alike.....It's a world class sound.

I know Israel Houghton plays a McPherson in his YouTube videos. How do these rate compared to the Ovations? Anyone have any experience with these?

The McPherson is a luthier-built custom acoustic.
I would imagine that even the best production-line-built Ovation is a laughable comparison to it.

Those custom guitars are so expensive though.

Most any custom guitar starts around $2500 and goes up from there.
Expensive? Yes, relatively speaking, but if you're planning on owning that one guitar for many, many years and play it regularly, you'll more than get your money's worth out of it, imho.

The biggest thing with any guitar is getting one that you enjoy playing. Doesn't matter if it cost $300 or $3000; if you get enjoyment from playing it then that's all that matters.

My Seagull cost me $600 some 10 years ago and I've more than gotten out of it what I put into it.

i just personally have never been able to enjoy the sound of an Ovation....they always sound "plasticky" to me. It doesn't matter if it's a $500 Ovation or a $2500 Ovation. They aren't my thing. That's why they make all types of guitars, lol.
