I truthfully don't put much stock into custom built guitars and how they play.
Every guitar I buy..... I still set up.
It doesn't matter if it's an Ovation or a Martin, or a custom Breedlove.
Every body has different hand sizes...and must be set up for that person.

Now as for how a guitar sounds.............get this, you can improve sound on a guitar by about 35% when you find the right  set of strings........ also the pick you use can make a huge difference in sound.
The more solid a pick, the more full the sound of the strings, the lighter the pick the brighter and more brassy a sound , yet much thinner from an acoustic.

Now....If people say an Ovation is a guitar to laugh at I'd say that person knows very little about guitars, and the mechanics behind guitars.
Please remember, there's some high quality Ovations out there.
I own an old deep bowl Ovation 1717 Legend, it's on my web site in my picture on my CD with me.
I stack that guitar against the best guitars in the world....custom or not. You're not going to get a better sounding guitar ever. You can go out and pay $25,000 and my 26 year Old Ovation hands down is better.
The reason why?............Ovations mellow with age, The deep bowl is deeper than any guitar I have ever seen.
The balance is perfect. I have taken that guitar into shops trying to find a guitar better...I never have,...I have played it in tons of concerts and everyone asks the same question, how do I get one ?....I have been offered a lot of money for it...BUt I will never sell it.......why.... they don't make them anymore.
But Ovation does make several high end guitars...........and remember this, the lie spread by other guitar  manufactors is Ovation Guitars Don't age as they get older......That's an out and out lie..........Do you know that 95% of the sound deals with the tone from the Top of the guitar and from the most perfect space inside a guitar.
All Wood guitars like Martin.... do not have that perfect shape, they are too box like....but Top Deep Bowl Ovations do have the shape. And the top wood age's. Companies like Martin or Taylor build rose wood sides and backs on guitars, they tell you they sound better.......NOt True....The sound comes from the vibrations off the top sound board or the top if the guitar. The sides have less than 3 to 5 % of the total sound, because the guitars are box like, they are not perfect in sound.
Ovation is designed with science in mind.
Like I said before...........if you buy a cheap Ovations for 300.00............you get a cheap Ovation, these are not Top end.
If you go to the Guitar Center, most likely they do not carry the Top End Ovations,if you want one, you're going to have to order it. And it will cost you over 2000.00.
Also a point to remember custom guitars are private made, or manufactored in small numbers, many times, they have imperfect guitar necks, and sometimes the bugs have to be worked out of the guitars.
Ovations on the the Other hand have made Millions of them.......the necks are perfect, I never felt a better guitar than an Ovation, and I have played every guitar on the market.
The finale result is this.........how you detail and set up your Ovation, will make it sound better.
But That's true on any guitar.
All I can say is this...............If you don't trust my opinion then do a test.......take a small digital recorder to the Music Store and record all the guitars............then go home and take a listen.
Top Ovations, have a deeper tone, they are clearer, and the sound is balanced perfectly.
Also.............anyone can have a custom made Ovation.....It may cost near 3000.00.......but it would be worth it.

the idea that a mass produced Ovation would somehow have better quality than a reputable hand made custom guitar is.....well.....just doesn't hold a lot of water.

You can believe what you want, everyone has an opinion, yet today guitars can be built better on toip CNC milling machines and far more perfect than a custom guitar.
You must remember 1 point, every company from Martin to Taylor to Ovation builds both cheap guitars and high end guitars.
I think way to many times people try the cheaper Ovations, and they just never try a 2,200.00 Ovation.
And the main reason is most stores do not carry them.
They must be ordered, or you have to find a store who carries them.
I've seen great Martin Guitars, and I've seen cheap ones that won't last over the years.
The TYpe of Ovation I am talking about is going to cost some major dollars.
I still stand by the fact, that no company has made a better guitar than Ovation did back in the early 1980's.
The deep bowl guitars where the best ever.
If I needed another guitar I'f go on ebay looking for one in excellent condition, luckly I own one.

OK, with all that being said, if something happened to your current axe of choice, and you couldn't buy another Ovation, what would you buy? Just for the sake of discussion...

Play what you like, and what you can afford.  There will always be "better" guitars until you get into a specific price range, and then it is very subjective.

I happen to like Ovations.  I acknowledge there are better guitars, but I am happy with mine, and it fits my price range.

i absolutely agree with you....

my issues are when someone spouts something as the be all end all and won't listen to anyone else's opinion...
