Is Jamal Hartwell one of the best??
« on: April 29, 2008, 10:21:22 AM »
I am a newbie and I have purchased a few DVD's by Jamal Hartwell.  I think hands down he is ridiculous.  The way he puts chords together and just his style is no joke.  Some of the tones he plays is sick.  Is he considered one of the best pianist out their??  If not who is better??  Links please???

I dunno about best.  :-\

I got one of his DVDs and frankly i don't like his style of teaching. He goes through almost no theory and just shows you the chord fingerings. That really does not help you play in other keys.  I will admit that he is a great player, simply fantastic at the keys.

you cant go through what you dont know.

I would say he is the choice for pianists who dont know theory or care about terminology, but want to understand what they play, and how to add other cool sounds that you have to learn by just hearing it and seeing it. And he'll teach you some theory in the process. But if you're looking for a whole bunch of explanation of why it works or sounds good, you'd have to search elsewhere.

Exactly. The DVD should be targeted at intermediate to advanced players. Beginners would only get confused or, at best, they would cram everything he showed them and not understand what they were doing.

It doesn't take away from him being a great player.

Jamal is very good.
Jamal is very smooth, and he's excellent at improvisation.

One of the Best?  No.

You asked for examples of who's better:

Derick Jackson, PJ Morgan, John Peters, David Jackson, Mike Bereal, Kevin Bond, Eddie Brown, and Travis Sayles.

You also asked for links.

I left out the Organ Clips, but all the guys I listed above with the exception of Kevin Bond are GREAT Organists also.

I wouldn't consider me one of the best. I would say that I have a particular style that some tend to like and I have a particular teaching style that some like and some don't. I can think of a ton of guys who are way better than me. But remember, it's not all about being BETTER....Remember every person has something to give. It's just that I've been playing a while and a few people love my style and some could care less about it. If your ears love my style then praise God :-D.

One thing about theory, is that I have grown a lot. In the beginning I had no theory and now, I am actually coming out with a DVD that teaches the number system. So you can see that I, Jamal Hartwell, too am learning along with everyone else. I don't have all the chords and licks. I'm learning just like everyone else.

Please note that it is very difficult to do a DVD when 80% of the people who purchase, don't now theory at all. So the 20% are bored and want theory, whereas if I was all theory, then the 80% are lost. So it's hard to please both. What I say is this: If you know theory, then use it and apply patterns to what I am saying. And...remember on the Urban Worship Xtreme, where my theory was lacking, I added sheet music, and the names of the chords on the screen.

Hope this helps!

I personally am a big fan I to me you are one of the best.  I have all your DVD's and at first I was just learning licks and chords.  Now that I know a little theory I can apply your chords and licks.

Example your circle of fifths you taught on  Urban Worship Contemporary and the substitutes you taught on extreme are excellent chords you can use for a lot of songs in Db.

There is theory there if you know some theory.  You just have to know how  to apply it.

We can tell. Its something when someone who is teaching the class, comes back with new stuff, reinventing themselves, and polishing off the rough edges. Alot of seasoned pros, dont think they need to practice, much less learn something new. I bought the entire Christmas bundle you offered,; I think I started with the Tritone Dvd (which is excellent btw. I got the main keyboardist at my church making those ugly faces during service cause he likes what Im playing. A really on time product! Nobody has thought of focusing a few hours teaching specifically on the tritone, and it was really helpful.). Later on I looked at the original contemporary worship dvd, which for me, was hard to get with because of vocab and such. (I will still study it though) In any case, it showed that you've moved WAY past were you were.

So tell us, since we have your attention:

How do you learn your best stuff?  I mean like when you're really learning it, for maximum understanding. How does a pro, keep up the serious learning, even the theory stuff?
-Through shedding alone tons of hours
-Shedding with others and exchanging stuff
-Listening to songs and other challenging stuff (in gospel, or in other genres)
-Working with a  mentor/teacher

Man, i got Jamal's Urban Xtreme, and i found it very helpful and very necessary for me to have!

Jamal beautifully demonstrates to you licks and progressions that people really want to be aware of and to have in their arsenal. And just to watch him flow, man that just opens your eyes up to all the possibilities!

He knows something; he's demonstrating it; and he's showing you note for note what he did, with Some theory added.

And he comes off as if he really wants you to get it. And i appreciate that, and i'm glad i purchased it.  That video was a blessing, no doubt. 8)

Dude! Welcome to LGM, man. Hope you can hang out, when you're not puttin' out your DVDs.  ;) When you put that number system DVD out there, I'll be sure to check it out.

Again, welcome.

Welcome to LGM..

I should get your DVDs!!!

1stly, I'm a beginner, but because I have focussed alot on my theory, I only struggle in few places to figure out what a guy would be doing in a dvd where there is no explaining (SO GUYS, IF YOU WANT TO GET MAX BENEFITS FROM DVDS U PURCHASE, U SHOULD DEDICATE SOME EFFORT INTO KNOWING YOUR THEORY--COME-ON, IT COMES FOR FREE HERE, SO NO EXCUSES PLEASE!!!!) ;D

ALRIGHT, I know this dude plays really well, but  don't know if he is rated as one ogf the best, & I find his so called "Intermediate- advanced" GK 600 SERIES quite easy to understand, even though I'm a beginner..

& because of this lil theory I have, I think I will benefit more from it then some1 who is a crazy cat but knows lil theory bcos they might only be able to play the stuff in the key that Jonathan Powell teaches in (Ab) & maybe, maybe, a few other keys..but with theory I can AUTOMATICALLY do it in all the keys without trial & error..

The guy does not talk of big stuff & he really tries to make the theory non-intimidating (like GospelMusicians said!)

great thread guys.
