I wouldn't consider me one of the best. I would say that I have a particular style that some tend to like and I have a particular teaching style that some like and some don't. I can think of a ton of guys who are way better than me. But remember, it's not all about being BETTER....Remember every person has something to give. It's just that I've been playing a while and a few people love my style and some could care less about it. If your ears love my style then praise God :-D.

One thing about theory, is that I have grown a lot. In the beginning I had no theory and now, I am actually coming out with a DVD that teaches the number system. So you can see that I, Jamal Hartwell, too am learning along with everyone else. I don't have all the chords and licks. I'm learning just like everyone else.

Please note that it is very difficult to do a DVD when 80% of the people who purchase, don't now theory at all. So the 20% are bored and want theory, whereas if I was all theory, then the 80% are lost. So it's hard to please both. What I say is this: If you know theory, then use it and apply patterns to what I am saying. And...remember on the Urban Worship Xtreme, where my theory was lacking, I added sheet music, and the names of the chords on the screen.

Hope this helps!

Hey Jamal! How have you been? Good hearing from you.

I think he is one of the best because Jamal totally doesn't focus on showing off either.  He clearly states in his frist DVD it's about flow and where the service is.  To many musicians try to impress eachother with crazy licks and movements.  but you have apeople that is hungry for God and need a breakthrough or a ouch and the musician is worried about impressing people.  Music is one of the most vital parts of a service and with some of his chords and what he stresses on his first DVD you can learn alot.

Again if you know theory to a certain degree his DVD's will teach you how to build on some of the chords and movements and things you can do besides the normal 1-2-3-4-5-6-7 movements and chords.

The boy is phat and nit's because of him I really buckled down and strated to learn how to play.

True. When it comes to gospel, Is not about being the best. Its about ministry.

I will definitely be sticking around! I can't promise that I can reply to every post, because I'm so busy. Just to give you a heads-up to what I'm doing.

I just finished a DVD for beginners teaching the Number system in the key of C and how to call out the the number system in every key.

I will answer some of the questions below:
How do you learn your best stuff?  I mean like when you're really learning it, for maximum understanding. How does a pro, keep up the serious learning, even the theory stuff?
-Through shedding alone tons of hours
-Shedding with others and exchanging stuff
-Listening to songs and other challenging stuff (in gospel, or in other genres)
-Working with a  mentor/teacher

This is how I learn my best stuff. Much of it comes from sitting down and the Holy Spirit just putting my hands down on a chord that I've always heard in my head. No lie...not trying to be super spiritual, but my signature lies in shedding with the Holy Spirit.

I take phat stuff I hear on GospelMusicians.com videos, songs and I don't just learn what they are doing. I FEEL and study what they are doing, so that I can take it and make it my own.

Step 1: Learn it EXACTLY AS YOU HEAR IT!
Step 2. Be able to play it in all keys!
Step 3: Try to apply what you've learned in substitutions. EVERY AND I MEAN EVERYTHING is a substitution for something. So the secret is....If you can find the substitution  for WHY they played it that way...then you can remember other songs with that particular progression, or substitution or passing chord and apply it.......NOW IT BECOMES ALL YOURS!

That last line or two, JH, that's what we could use in your DVDs; the why behind the what.  ;)

Why play such and such when I'm going to such and such chord. That kind of thing.

Again, dude, welcome.  ;D

Yall are dragging your feet, so I'll be the first to make this request:

Jamal, can you give us a nice progression that we should learn in all Keys?

Not something basic, but a progression with substitutions.

Thanks man.

On another note, for you to come out and admit that you're not one of the best took a lot of character.  There are some pros who would (and have) come on LGM to take shots at people who say they aren't the best.

That is why he is one of the best.  His humility.  Can't wait to buy that numbers DVD.  Also the organist in my church took lessons from Jamal.  I saw him in one of his DVD's online.  I think he is cousins to the guy Byron "talk Box" and the kid is ridiculous.  I mean OFF THE CHAIN.

Nice word. But I thought this wasn't a forum to compare/contrast who's better  ?/? ?/?. I think it's all about ministry. We are all on different levels and we all have different styles. Jamal is blessed with his style and it has helped others grow in their ministry, like me. But he's a beast though!

Jamal Hartwell is sweet................i kinda get something different out of his dvd's.  Me and one of my buddies watched Urban Worship Xtreme.  He takes what the average intermediate keyboard player knows and re-applies it totally different.  I knew a lot of the stuff that he did, but just seeing him do it made me re-think my approach.  For example, i'm sure a lot of cats on here know what a major 7th chord is.............but his approach to the chord was crazy (he called it major 7th on steroids or somethin like that)
