How about an active bass with a passive override?

I typically prefer active, but it's nice to have that safety net when your batteries die and you can just go to passive mode.

Cosigned!!!  I love that my 5 string is active and passive.....never had the batteries die on me in the middle of playing but it's nice know that I'm covered even if they did die.

All my basses, except my Fender Jazz, are active. Funny that I always run them flat with a bit of treble boost. At some point, all my basses will be passive. I rarely change my settings while I'm playing with the exception of adding a bit of treble when I'm slapping.

Battery life is certainly variable but it can be prolonged.  My bass teacher told me that keeping your bass plugged in when you are not playing it shortens battery life.

I'm still trying to decide between the two; however, to answer the question on the fly, I would have to say passive. Reason being, you don't have to worry about that darn battery. I had to change mine out several times but that was before I learned that to preserve the battery on my particular guitar (5 string Ibanez 505 Soundgear) I needed to remove the cable from the guitar when not in use - this is really an inconvenience for me. I wish I knew about  combination Active/Passive switches when I was seeking to purchase my bass. It would be nice to toggle back and forth between modes. Not to metion having that added bit of security from being stranded should your battery die on you.
To YOU God be the glory!

My main Bass that I'm using now is a Marcus Miller V that I just use in it's passive and if I want to use it in the Active mode, I bypass the stock preamp (which is horrible )and run it thru an old Sadowsky outboard preamp

This is why I like my Lakland because it can do both.  I like active, but I use effects, which always work better with passive basses.
