I don't know much about the actual gift, but I know that it is not for sale like some folks have chosen to do on TV. If God truly gave you a word, then give it freely from your heart and don't ask me to spend 100's to 1000's of dollars a years to receive it. God will bless those who are truly in the helping business. If one has the true gift of Prophecy, it should not be exploited like it so often is.
I can share one experience though. About 4 years ago, I was out at the B.B. Kings Blues club here in Nashville to hear an aquaintance perform. Afterwards, this woman asked me to dance. She was absolutely stunning, but it was obvious that she had taken a little nip, so I politley declined. She insisted, but I declined again. She said OK, well just talk to me for a minute. I was like OK. Then she shared that I have something in my life that I really want to do and I've been feeling like it would never happen. I will be discouraged, but to keep on going for it because I will succeed. It was scary because it was if I had a window in the side of my head and she could see exactly what I was thinking/feeling. She said that she just wanted to say that to me. I thanked her, and then she walked away. I considered that a prophecy because she was describing my pursuit of a full-time music career without having asked any personal questions about me or what I did.
I could have missed out on a potential wife too. She was gorgeous.
