I think your best producers are musicians. You will be very hard pressed to find a great producer that is not a musician. With that said every musician is not a producer. It takes more than just knowing how to play an instrument to become a great producer. You have to understand music, but not necessarily have to know how to read music. I think understanding music is really the key to becoming a great producer & that comes from being exposed to great music. All great producers will have a long list of great music that they were exposed to. So being a great musician will not make you a great producer, but most great producers are good or great musicians with a broad understanding of music.
While I agree with you for the mostpart, there are cases where you have someone that is a good producer but isn't a musician at all.  One may lack the ability to play an instrument, but if you know what makes a record marketable and you know the trends and what's popular, you can instruct the musicians, beatmakers, engineers, etc to get the song the way you think it should be.  A good example is Diddy.  I know a few DJs that also fall into that category.

B_Jizzle, no problemo.  Anytime you need a rant, I'm up for it.   ;D

Well, when I think of producers, Diddy is not even thought of. No disrespect, his name just never pop up in the conversation.  When I think producers, I think of people like Maurice White, Fred Hammond,  Babyface & LA, Kevin Bond, Michael Brooks, Marcus Miller, David Foster, etc. But if you want to compare the rap game Dr. Dre hands down is the best Producer & he's a musician. I also like Daz & I think Daz is a musician, but i'm not certain.  I'm not saying that a non musician can't be a great producer, just seem to me that the best producers are musicians. Now, I don't know if Rodney Jerkins is a musician, but he's a bad brotha.

I agree.

And Rodney Jerkins is a musician.  His brother Fred is also.  Their father is a Pastor as well.  So you know where they got their start.

Don't get me wrong I am not in any way, shape, or form a Diddy fan.  I really can't stand the dude, but as far as knowing what will sell and providing the direction to his production staff to get it done, I can't take anything away from him.

As far as great producers that are musicians, add Quincy Jones and Teddy Riley to the list.

I agree bruh, but let us not forget Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Prince too, when he takes a notion to produce or write for other artists ;D
