What would you do?
« on: May 08, 2008, 09:17:15 PM »
Guys, I'm minister of music at my church. One of the musicians set themself down a year ago because they couldn't be dedicated to rehearsal.  They always tried to compete and overpower during worship service.  Anyway, they played the organ an old kawai that's out of standard tuning and has keys broken.  I had the organ taken out 2 yrs ago.  Well, I'm not going to be at church Sunday so my assistant rehearsed everything for Sunday.  I go to Bible Study and notice the organ is back in the church for the musician who couldn't commit down to play on.  Thr trustees were told to put the organ back and no one cunsulted me and my pastor didn't know anything about it and said that I', the one to make the call on situations like this.  What would you guys do?  I confronted the ones who brought the organ back in and they had attitudes and told me I wasn't gonna be there anyway on Sunday. Please give me some of your thoughts.

If the pastor has given you the autonomy and the authority to make decisions concerning the music ministry, then address the issue head-on.

Explain to the musicians that whether you're there or not they need to follow the rules and procedures that have been set...by you by authority of the pastor.

If they have a problem with that, then you may need to set up a conference with them, yourself and the pastor to establish clear lines of communication.
Despite our communication technology, no invention is as effective as the sound of the human voice.

Do you want to be proven right or do you want unity?  Sometimes we have to choose our battles wisely.  In the scope of the whole, does it really matter whether the guy plays the organ on the Sunday you're out or not.  We all have our preferences.  When I'm out of town, I'm only responsible to make sure that the music is covered.  I don't want to become so controlling that I'm telling people which instruments to use and what songs to play.  I want those filling in to be as comfortable as possible, especially since they are doing me a favor by covering my responsibilities while I'm out.

I personally think you should let it go.  You can demand the organ to be taken out and test this person's spirit, which I think God does not us, but in doing so you may risk not having a musician to cover the service that day.  I live by a motto:  "The whole is more important than the individual parts."  For me, that means that in this case the music being covered for the whole church is more important than your personal feelings about the organ being in the sanctuary for one service that you won't be in anyway.

Ultimately, never get on the trustees' bad side.  They really do carry weight with pastors.  If you buck them too much, you may not have a job, regardless of how much the pastor likes you.  :-)

The music for Sunday was taken care of at choir rehearsal on Tuesday.  I have an assistant who plays from time to time.  I am also a trustee as well as MOM at my church so either way I feel as if I am being "backdoored".

That may be the case, but I would not sweat the small stuff.

One of the problems I was faced with was lack of commincation (not being brought in the loop of some things). This can be frustrating at times, but we all make human mistakes / decisions. I would speak with the ones who made the decision and ask to be kept in the loop of things (I think if you would have known a head of time, you would have been ok with it). Music is a very important part of giving God praise. We may not like the way some people use there gift. But we are not to judge others. They will be held accountable for their actions. Just keep doing God's will in your life, and He will work it out.

Whoever told the trustees to put the organ back might be the one you need to communicate with.

You don't this situation to fester nor do you want a repeat.
