I do these things already   ;D   I would definately be buying a tiny car to drive back and forth to work.  I'm planning to do that anyway as soon as I pay off my SUV.

See, my car is paid off already. I refuse to go into hock just to try and save money on gas. ::)

If I remember correctly, one of your in-laws is an auto mechanic (or at least skilled in that area??).  If gas prices were to continue to rise, it might do you well to do the math and see if paying cash for a small, but reliable, knock-around car that does better on gas would profit you significantly.  Over a few years, the savings can be significant.  :-\

I don't like gas prices at $3.75. So $10.00 I would be working from home. I am putting in real thought about getting a motorcycle.
I'm destined for greatness!!!

..people...people....we need to stop talking about gas as if it has a mind of it's own...if "it" goes up?

....The "IT" that we are referring to is AMERICAN companies...The oil industry decided some years ago that we pay less than anywhere else in the world and that was going to end.  There goal is to charge us what the market will bare and it's $10.00 a gallon then so be it.

...So stop looking at this as if there is some problem out there that is causing this that should be fixed soon or correct itself!....cuz in reality it is not only NOT a problem to the oil industry and the US government.....People invested in that industry are becoming quite wealthy!

The stock holders that have invested there are taking America to the bank. You are watching capitalism at it's best....(that's not a bad thing by the way!)

...Remember....SUPPLY AND DEMAND!

THE MORE YOU BUY...THE MORE THEY WILL CHARGE!

SO BUY LESS!!!

You make a good point. However i also have to point out that people need to still get to wherever it is they are going and, for the most part, having a car gets them there faster. The best solution is to have better public transportation system in our states.

Very few cities or areas in America have a good and reliable public transportation system. New York and DC are the two top cities for excellent transportation. The problem with public transportation is that there is very little economic incentive for a private individual to go into it. Its very expensive and time-consuming to set up a public transportation system. Even the ones we have now are being heavily subsidized by the government and are making losses.

We also should encourage people to bike more or use conveyances that use very little petrol (motor scooters, motorcycles, e.t.c.). Take a bike for example. The initial cost of owning one is nothing compared to the savings you will get back from having to buy gas.

However, all this is SO difficult to achieve. It requires a change of the American mind-set and a refocusing from corporate greed to being more socially responsible and aware. But lets not forget the specter of...Corporate America.

We can sit here and say that demand and supply are the main culprits, but lets not forget human nature and greed that seems to be inherent to Corporate America. What we have is CREATED demand and supply. We are bombarded with endless ads that persuade us that we NEED that new car that guzzles gas like it was water. Its a blessed shame really.
The car, job, house wife/husband are not the reward, God is.

I buy the same amount of gas as always.  I know they say China is using more oil but when did this start? 05? 06?  a month ago?

Having only skimmed your post, I say the following; Nah, not really.

See, if folks DID take public transportation and took longer to get to work, eventually, the oil companies would have to do something to fix the work slow down.

Let's see how they'd react to teachers EVERYWHERE taking public transportation or carpooling and being stuck in traffic.

Let's see how they'd react to businessmen EVERYWHERE riding the subway.

Etc, etc.

It could work.

Yeah.  I can get the licence and the lessons on my own but when it comes to getting the bike and the insurance...I need my parents.  They'd rather me stay in my car.  A friend of mine wants a Vespa Scooter.  I haven't looked into Vespas for myself so I'm not sure how they compare to motorcycles.  Also, I'm not sure how receptive my parents would be to the Vespa

Question:

What if you have allergies?  Will a hemlet keep the pollen out?  Will they have to make a special helmet to filter pollen?  I was just thinking that people, like myself, who have allergies are stuck with cars because the weather is either too cold/icy for a scooter or motorcycle or there's too much pollen.

I dont think people will let that happen and if they do the tension will be so high here in the US that a wrong move could break out a riot.
Vision without action is just day dreaming. I miss practicing.

THAT. WASN'T. THE. QUESSSSSS-TION, MAN OF MYSTERY!!!   :D :D :D :D

The question is, if gas were to go up to $10, hypothetically, how would your life change?  What would you do differently, if anything?
