..people...people....we need to stop talking about gas as if it has a mind of it's own...if "it" goes up?
....The "IT" that we are referring to is AMERICAN companies...The oil industry decided some years ago that we pay less than anywhere else in the world and that was going to end. There goal is to charge us what the market will bare and it's $10.00 a gallon then so be it.
...So stop looking at this as if there is some problem out there that is causing this that should be fixed soon or correct itself!....cuz in reality it is not only NOT a problem to the oil industry and the US government.....People invested in that industry are becoming quite wealthy!
The stock holders that have invested there are taking America to the bank. You are watching capitalism at it's best....(that's not a bad thing by the way!)
...Remember....SUPPLY AND DEMAND!
THE MORE YOU BUY...THE MORE THEY WILL CHARGE!
SO BUY LESS!!!
You make a good point. However i also have to point out that people need to still get to wherever it is they are going and, for the most part, having a car gets them there faster. The best solution is to have better public transportation system in our states.
Very few cities or areas in America have a good and reliable public transportation system. New York and DC are the two top cities for excellent transportation. The problem with public transportation is that there is very little economic incentive for a private individual to go into it. Its very expensive and time-consuming to set up a public transportation system. Even the ones we have now are being heavily subsidized by the government and are making losses.
We also should encourage people to bike more or use conveyances that use very little petrol (motor scooters, motorcycles, e.t.c.). Take a bike for example. The initial cost of owning one is nothing compared to the savings you will get back from having to buy gas.
However, all this is SO difficult to achieve. It requires a change of the American mind-set and a refocusing from corporate greed to being more socially responsible and aware. But lets not forget the specter of...Corporate America.
We can sit here and say that demand and supply are the main culprits, but lets not forget human nature and greed that seems to be inherent to Corporate America. What we have is CREATED demand and supply. We are bombarded with endless ads that persuade us that we NEED that new car that guzzles gas like it was water. Its a blessed shame really.
