When the song is over ...
« on: May 19, 2008, 12:12:00 PM »
I need some different things to play for "entering in." I'm talking about after the song is over and the praise continues. In Christianese terms it's called "singing in the spirit." You could play the vamp of the song that just finished or do some kind of tremolo thing in the left hand with chords above but I need some other stuff.

Ideas? What do y'all do?

I choose a cheesy way out and play a I maj7 or 9 to a IV maj 7 or 9. Those two chords take me "in" personally so i just use it in church.

Nice 1 Fenix. That's really nice & good voicings make it wow.

Another 1 I like is the 1-7-3-???

1/ 1 maj chord
7/ 4 maj chord.
3/ 1 sus2 (b13) chord (don't know if name is right)

Here's a few things you can do.  The examples will be in the key of Eb.  You can play the examples w/ or w/out a beat.  Just for beat purpose, I put some time counts in [ ] to give an idea of how to play with a beat:

Idea #1

[1, 2, 3, 4] Eb / Bb-Eb-G
[1, 2, 3, 4] Eb / Cb-Eb-F-Ab
(repeat)

This is very simple, just 2 chords using the same bass note.  You can use different inversions of those chords.

*Theory tidbit for those who don't Know:  In music, when there is one bass note being held for more than one note, we call that a pedal tone.

Idea #2

[1, 2] Eb / Db-F-Ab-C
[3, 4] Eb / Db-F-G-Bb  or  Eb / Db-F-A-C
[1, 2] Eb / C-Eb-G-Bb
[3, 4] Eb / Cb-Eb-F-Bb, Ab
(repeat)

This is more of a variation on Idea #1 that really brings some color to your playing.  Here I'm utilizing that pedal tone idea, but playing even more smoother & "phatter" chords to compliment that bass note.

Idea #3

[1, 2, 3, 4] G / F-Bb-D
[1, 2, 3, 4] F / Eb-Ab-C
[1, 2, 3, 4] Eb / F-Bb-D
[1, 2, 3, 4] Ab / Ab-Bb-C-Eb
(repeat)

You can use different inversions of those chords and add little runs to it for improv.  This is a little progression taken from the song "Ignite My Fire" by William Murphy.

Idea #4

[1, 2, 3] Ab / Eb-Ab-C
[4] Bb / F-Bb-Db
[1, 2] C / Ab-C-Eb
[3, 4] D / Bb-Db-F
[1, 2, 3, 4] Eb / Bb-Eb-G
[1, 2, 3, 4] G / F-G-Bb-Eb
(repeat)

This is just a little progression u can use when people are crying out to the Lord or worshipping.

Idea #5

[1, 2, 3] Ab / Gb-Cb-Eb
[4] Gb / Ab-Db-F
[1, 2] Cb / Bb-Eb-Gb
[3, 4] Eb / Ab-Db-F
(repeat a few times)

[1, 2] Ab / Gb-Cb-Eb
[3, 4] Bb / Ab-Db-F
[1, 2, 3, 4] Eb / Bb-Eb-G

In another thread in the Gospel Hangout room, they were talking about "borrowed" chords.  Well, here is a prime example of using "borrowed" chords, specifically the b6 & b7 chords.

Idea #6

[1, 2, 3, 4] Db / Bb-Eb-G
[1, 2, 3, 4] C / C-Eb-Ab
[1, 2, 3, 4] Cb / Cb-Eb-F-Ab
[1, 2, 3, 4] Bb / Bb-Eb-G
(repeat)

Anybody who knows anything about gospel music has heard this progression before in MANY songs.  There are so many variations and things you can add to this til it ain't even funny.

Is that enough Ideas for ya?  I can post more if yall want em.

One day I might get the hang of the number system but I still do the old school way. Here's a youtube video I did just for this post. I get carried away near the end running my version of the cirlce of 4ths chords.

I love music, any kind of music.

This always work especially if you know how to link the i and the iv with tasteful filler chords. But i do it in using minor chords. Check out the jamals DVDs and build on it.It never gets boring if you know your inversions.

I actually dont even use filler chords.  ;D I am so lazy i just switch the tone to a smooth electric piano/ rhodes type sound and hold down the sustain pedal like my life depended on it

OK i am still interested so can you post some more? Thanks.

Oh and this is very off-topic but when you practice Hanon in other keys, do you keep the same fingering? Its very awkward playing it in like Ab or even B.
