What is it you are trying to do?  Performance mode acomplishes 3 things (maybe more)   1. You can use it for layering sounds together. 2. You can use it to have multiple parts playing when you use the sequncer/ song mode.  3. You can use it for live performance, splits, or when you want to change between sounds quickly.  Are you trying to do any of these things?

That's why I always ask what you are trying to do or accomplish.  Keyboards can do so much and sometimes folks think they have to use every feature.  It can be somewhat overwhelming at times.

Great question!
I think the Fenbox was just curious what the feature does..rite?
I know for some Rols, a similar feature is used to layer / split sounds like TMR has mentioned..
I know other people use it as a transpose tool (Don't ask me how these guys do it, but after some years with the boards, they know how to do it)..

Sorry i did not see this in time.

I am trying to set it up in such a way that i can quickly swatch between sounds AND layer sounds at the same time.

This manual is confusing.  ?/?

I've got the Motif rack but the keyboard is similar.  When you go into performance mode, you'll probably see a factory performance.  You can edit theirs or do an INIT and it defaults to the INIT performance.  You have 16 parts.  Each part can have its own midi channel or they can be the same.  Each part has parameters for what patch it uses, tuning, pan, FX, key range, and even velocity range, etc.  A split would have different key ranges for each sound.  A layer would just be multiple sounds on the same channel.  After you get your performance the way you like it, you save it.  You can also use the part buttons to turn the part on and off.  That makes it easy to switch sounds or change up the layers. I hope some of my babbling is helping.

In theory it makes perfect sense.

2 issues;

1) I am not at my keyboard so i can't visualize it.

2) Due to my own laziness, i was expecting a "Hit this button, press that button..." kind of thing so i could print out and try at church. :)

I'm not in front of my rack so can't help you with the laziness.  It's fairly intuitive to me and the manual might be overcomplicating it for you.

I know exactly how you feel. I have the MO8 and I have no idea how to use it yet. I need to know why my sounds cut so short. I play the organ mostly on my MO8 and I have a sustain pedal but the sounds still don't hold the way an organ is supposed to hold. What do I do?

Chevonee, i am SO glad i am not the only one going through that sound issue. I primarily use the Piano sound, and even with a sustain pedal pressed down to the floor, the sound cuts off and does not sustain long at all. It is SO frustrating. What gets me is i watch these YouTube videos of the demonstration of the Motif, they make it sound so good.

The manual is way too overwhelming.

I'm grasping at straws here because I have the rack version but is there a chance you have the those four knobs active? (attack, resonance, decay, release)  I would think they would not affect the sound by default but that could make the sounds shorter than they should be.

HOLD ON TO THOSE STRAWS!!!!!

I do notice that the light next to the four knobs is lit and the four knobs are all set to middle position, as well as the sliders. Could it be that, in the act of pretending to some choir girl that i was some technical know-it-all, i inadvertently messed with the settings? Another issue is that all my life i have been either playing an acoustic grand or a portable. I am so new to this workstation thing and having to tweak sounds and what not.

:(

I'm still trying to master the art of sustaining without the pedal the sustain pedal can act very funny.

& like TMR hinted, those effects can change your tears of frustration to boastful joy..so go ahead & play around with those effects..They're there 4 a reason Fenbox & I don't know why UI should be happy to know that U'r not the only 1 having problems..U'r such a bad man ;D

OK in reference to your white print, its not that i am dancing for joy that she is having problems with her board, i am happy cuz now i know that it probably wasn't something i did wrong. :)

I am going to mess around with the attack and release and all that. It is SO frustrating to have your sound cut off too soon.

Can anyone please help? Thanks in advance.

If you havent already, purchase the Motif ES DVD. (Chevonne I dont know if one is available for the M08.)

I would also use tabs and a highlighter with the manuals, as if  it were a bible. It makes it easier to find topics that you may need to revisit.

Here are some sights that have helped me out.

If you are ever interested in knowing what your motif is capable of doing, please youtube any Motif demos by this dude; Bert Smorenburg.  He is on another radar when it comes to the Motif.   I know he has a Motif ES demo on youtube. He is pretty funny too.

Hope this helps.

PS After seeing a demo of the new G8, and actually playing one, I may be switching. That board is something else.  It beats the XS hands down on all levels.
Im too tall to act small.
