If you say: "this is a GREAT guitar!", what are a few important things that MAKE it a great guitar for you? 8)

Emotion. The emotion of the player has to be able to to be felt through the playing. It has to have great dynamics. :'(

The body has to ring like a bell and the neck has to fit my hand. Everything else is secondary and some stuff (pickups and such) can be changed but if the wood resonates and the neck is comfy, I'd probably call it a great guitar.

....some time ago I had an Gibson L5 solid body...L5S......it has a Diquisto neck on a real solid body with paf pickups....and it had a resale value to equal or greater than its purchase price..   a neck that fits your hand and a body that lays just right on yours...at a weight that is not too much...and electronics that answer the questions in your creative mind....

....I will get another before I die...They are a little pricey...

Sorry. I answered the wrong question! ?/? ::) >:(

To answere the real question, I think that the feel of the neck and the resonation of the wood is very important. On the more superficial side, I love a nice flame top... :o

GREAT recovery Trackman! lol (hercules! hercules! hercules!).

The wood resonation/comfortable neck/nice weight/"electronics answer"...all seem to be "sound" answers.

The more overlap you hear from different players, the more insight illuminated. 8)

Thanks SEEMUNNY! ;D

The most comfy neck that I have played so far has been my - believe it or not - Epiphone SG Special. My first. Even though the action on it was very high, That was probably the fastest neck I've played. Comparably I like the Deluxe Players' Strat neck too. Nothing wrong with that axe!!!

The neck is number one for me.

The body is a close second... ok, it's a tie.

Like Dave said, p/u's can be swapped, so that's kind of an afterthought.

Visual is getting less important to me as I get older, honestly. Although I'd love to have a decked-out PRS, I love the relic'd thing, too. I won't pay extra for it, I own sandpaper lol.

Actually, I was recently digging on the replacement of the Wolfgangs--the HP specials... custom shop, starting around $2k...  :(  BUT, if they have the same neck as the Wolf... saving my pennies.

Two of the nicest playing and sounding Les Pauls that I've played lately could be referred to as the most unattractive:
Les Paul BFG and Les Paul New Century.
The BFG is an exercise in minimalism and crudeness with it's unsanded top, missing pieces, rough finish and all that BUT the Burstbucker/P90 combo just rocks and the chunky '50s neck gives me something to hold on to.
The New Century is the typical Les Paul Special SL but with a full face mirrored pickguard...not attractive to many people...but the Alnico II magnet pickups sound like heaven and the example that I played has to be one of the BEST Les Pauls I've ever put my hands on in nearly 30 years of playing Les Pauls.
The kicker for both guitars: you can find then each for about $700 brand new.

They are both "great guitars" in the way that they play and sound. Their looks, otoh, only a mother could love...
