Trying A Different Key
« on: May 25, 2008, 10:14:50 AM »
Today I tried progressions in another key Ab and here's what I came up with. Take a look/listen and let me know if I could have done something different.

Ab/EbAbBbC
Db/FAbCEb
C/FACEb-passing chord
Bb/FBbCDb
Eb/AbDbF
Eb/BbEbG

repeat w/inversions then go to

F/AbCEbG
Db/FAbCEb
Bb/FBbCDb
EbAbDbF
Eb/BbEbG

To be honest I was getting tired of playin' in the same key ::) Still got a lot more of learning and studing to do, if I want to get this down better.

I just can't figure out why a so called advanced player would only hang on to 1 key for dear life..don't the guys get bored ::)

I got bored of 1 key before I could play a couple of songs..Now i feel more challenged..

I notice tha a lot too. Some guys just have a preference. I prefer the black keys. I will never play in the white keys unless I have to. its just more comfortable - fingering wise.

I've always loved just playing on the black keys, although I do sometimes play in C or other keys as well. Just when I started chording progressions they just happen to be in Db. Must be the sound.

Believe or not most of my songs I compose are in different keys.

I'm with you on that.  After I have played in a certain key in church for a while, I change it (whether the singers like it or not, LOL).  I just get tired of playing in the same key all the time, there isn't any growth in that.

Preference is one thing, but a lot of musicians don't know enough other keys to even have a preference.  I prefer the black keys also.

Funny enough it was just this year i started using the "black" keys. Prior to this year i was playing exclusively in C, G, E or A cuz our church sings all these CCM songs and they are all in those keys. Then i bought GospelKeys 202 and ALL he taught was in Db. That is where my love affair with Db started. We are still going strong but i am started to get bored and Eb is looking mighty good...

I've been thinking about you all day man..& thinking how you say Db is the heavenly key :D
Well, it felt like that today man..my fingers moved so naturally to play anything I heard in my heard & it felt like I was in 3rd heaven..
Eb is also coming nicely, but not yet there..I certainly like doing my 6-2-5-1 in it though ;D

Lately, my "heavenly" key has been C# minor.  Now, I know how that sounds, a minor key being heavenly?  :o  Just give it a try man, I felt like I was on cloud 189.  :D

Fenbox, I made up some cool progressions in Bbm, I was just trying to play somethin with a latin feel, but somehow I ended up with lots of Bbm progressions ::) I'll post them so that you can tell God I gave you your ticket to heaven :D :D

Good. Now lets try this again.

Of course C# minor would be you favorite key since its close to C# major which is a heavenly key to start with.  ::)

Ha!!! With Sjon around, who needs green stars. :D

No they aren't man, C# major & C# minor are "worlds" apart.  C# minor is indeed the relative minor of E major.  So, I am really playing in E, LOL.
