What Do Yall Think About...
« on: June 13, 2008, 12:43:27 AM »
I hear you guys talking about a lot of different drummers.

What do yall think about that cat that used to drum for Saturday Night Live & Paul Schaffer (w/David Letterman) "Steve Jordan?"

Also, what do yall think about "Omar Hakim" (Urban Knights w/ Ramsey Lewis, Victor Bailey, Jonathan Butler), Sting, Marcus Miller, Miles, Weather Report, Anita Baker, etc.. 8)

Im a big fan of both. Id watch Omar every weekend when he was on TV playing the the David Sanborn  show backing everyone... The man could play anything and his technique was perfect. If you can find his teaching videos GET THEM!!!!! You want to pick up some real musical licks he's the man.

Steve to me is just like Omar but without the chops. He's one of the most musical, most respected drummers on the planet. And his Sig. snare sounds awesome too! To tell you the truth I liked the first David Letterman band when Steve was the drummer.. I was really young  when he was on it BUT, even Anton Fig's drumming on that show back in the day was awesome too but now they have slowed down.

Ahhh! I thought those two were tight, but since i have never seen anyone on LGM mention their names, i just wanted to see what LGM drummers thought about them. Good post! 8)

I've been on Omat Hakim since the Anita Baker heyday, lol.  Steve is a nice drummer, too.

...well they sure are my cup of Kool-Aid.  8)

...Steve Jordan ("Lesson Learned" - Alicia Keys/John Mayer)
Continuum/John Mayer

...Omar Hakim (Victor Bailey - Low Blow CD *Dennis C. is also in that recording.*)

...these gentlemen make everything they play "groove."  That's something that I'm constantly working on.

As I have stated a few times before Omar is the reason that I started playing drums seriously! His sense of groove and fluidity are phenomenal!

Steve is awesome! I always know when Steve is playing due to the overwhelming sensation to bob my head to the music...

I remember seeing Steve Jordan playing in the John Mayer Trio. I remember so vividly watching him on T.V. play NOTHING FLASHY yet I was in complete AWE of how he was doing what he doing. He's played with the best of em' for a reason.

Omar was a big influence on me when I was younger. Dream of the Blue Turtles is what really did it for me. I would watch that movie almost everyday...

Both of them are great drummers.  Steve Jordan has played for some of everybody.  I watched him on the old David Letterman show.  I give him the "legend" title.  He is also a very talented producer.  I actually met him as I was walking down the street here in downtown Nashville one night.  Now that was a trip.  He was in town producing a project with blues guitarist Robert Cray.  He is doing it with John Mayer.  That says a lot about John Mayer respect for music for selecting him to work with be it that he(John) is a young cat.

As for Omar Hakim.  He is one of the coldest ever.  I was familiar with him for a while as a child, but when he hooked up with Sting, that sealed the deal.  Omar has one of the most classic solos on "I Burn For You" from the "Dream of the Blue Turtles" project.  I've actually posted a clip of it on here in the past.

Here it is.

Even when he played or Madonna with Victor Bailey, he brought a whole new dimension to her music.  Omar is one of the best.
When you've done your very best, do even better.
