Some old school Omar Hakim
« on: September 01, 2007, 04:28:22 PM »
Here's an old jam from Sting featuring a solo from Omar Hakim.  This is a very solid solo to me.  Intense and well conceived.  I love this song.  This is back in the mid 80's when Sting first went solo and got a band full of jazz cats and he was tearing it up for a minute.  I remember this song when it was new so that makes me kinda old.

Omar Hakim-drums
Darryl Jones-bass
Kenny Kirkland-keyboards
Branford Marsalis -Saxaphones
Sting-guitar and vocals.
Background vocalists-????? but they are vets in th biz still workig today.

Omar's solo is what did it for me Big foot! His solo in within the structure of the song. He's the reason why 6/8 is my favorite time signature to solo and flow too. Classic man!!! All the young brothers in the room need to hit this thread and learn from it.

Branford killed it too. The notes he choose where excellent!!!

...Sting and Omar.  Classic.  His phrasing is out of this world.  :o

...I've been searching for this concert on DVD.  Appareantly they only have it on VHS and LaserDisc.  :-\

That's why I posted it.  Players like him have what a lot of young cats aren't having these days, and that is longevity.  He may not be a mainstream "superstar," but he is still working after all of these years, and that is what's most important.  It was a musical solo, not a chops demonstration.  He was given the spotlight, instead of stealing it like some cats do.

You posted this thread in Sept. 07 and only got one hit. That's a shame, because you posted a legend and a educator. maybe this time the brothers will get it...

I may have missed it, but does anyone happen to know the name of that song?  I was going to try to find some of Sting's CDs during his early post Police days

And thanks Big for the post!

No problem.

It is called "I Burn For You."  It's from "Dream of the Blue Turtle."

That's from the Burning for Buddy CD, which was produced by Neil Peart ('94/'95).  It's a good CD.  I need to get another copy of it, since I let someone have it (looks at SK)...   ;D

Sorry - I only listened to the pick up notes to his solo, then stopped it because I knew what song it was.  I then wanted to watch it, only to see the title of the song displayed.  I just "Captain Obvious'd" myself...
